Interesting week in the champ, Uni beat Hobart in a thriller - Hobart were apparently up 3-1 with 20 minutes to go and ended up losing 5-3, pretty unbelievable result really- that might be a massive choke in terms of the title race would have put them 5 points clear of Uni and Eagles and they are still first a point infront of eagles and 2 in front of Uni - Uni have a game in hand though so as long as they get past Metro they will be top.

Beachside drew 1-1 against Nelson, Nelson can be a difficult task with the direct football they play but Beach are now down in the cellar of Southern Champ behind Taroona and Metro. Still cleaning up Champ 1 somehow- and have declined sharply since winning the Summer Cup and drawing with Hobart in the he opener- seems like they don't like the experience of Matt Hall and some others who consistently perform at that level in their senior side, Hickey has been in and out of the side as well - They did lose a bit of quality this offseason but they have some cultural problems at that club, seems like there isn't any heart or soul to them at the moment..

Eagles have been flying under the radar, they probably aren't the best team but have a lot of depth and have done well against Uni on both occasions, but have not at all done well against Hobart, they are now a point behind Hobart.

Still, could be an all time title race, only 4 points separate the top 3 teams with Uni having a game in hand. They are probably the best team, as shown by their cup run and how they played Devonport, just depends if they can avoid slipping up vs the Nelsons and Metros of the world if they are to do it. Good allround stuff there..

In one game Barnard scores twice as many goals as Clarence have all season........

Fantastic to see you out there casting your eye over the junior leagues today Walter!!

Well the Score in the Clarence v Devonport game is proof
that the NPL needs 10 teams.
teams like Clarence should remain in the NPL and that will
improve the competition.
What a joke

That's a fairly good call Champ observer.
I think it will go down to the last roster game where Eagles play United.
From what I heard you don't read anything into the Eagles game where they were thrashed by United. Apparently you can not comment on the inexperienced officials in the middle as it's taboo.
Uni are always the team to beat no matter who they put on the park.

how about a 4 team Southern NPl as there is only South and Warriors who are quality and also have players coming through their system. Look at Zebras, Lions, Clarence and Knights as they are years away with quality youth.
it doesn't matter what new teams come in to a new competition as they are years behind the established clubs like South and Warriors so I a nut shell it isn't going to get any better. That's what happens when you leave it seven years to have a review. Too little too late.

To anon,

Apparently the sending off of Clark was very stiff a red card for a foul as the last defender inside Hobart's half and then they fell to pieces from there. Not sure how much to read into that, except that Hobarts attack can be very potent at times.

You win some you lose some though, Eagles were massively under the pump against Uni but still got a great result through two worldies, a nice counterattack and catching Uni in the middle of exams.

Uni are a bit vulnerable, not always at their best and have comeback from behind about 4 times this season, they obviously have a heap of heart and are fit. But you get them on an off day and teams are a chance.

Oh My God ! Granted that most of the Clarence team are not up to scratch but seriously they would be better off just putting a cardboard cutout of Peter Shilton in the middle of the goalposts than the guy that is there now , I have never seen in all my life such poor decision making

How about South and Olympia have a best of three rock-paper-scissors for the chance to have a best of 5 coin toss against Devenport?

Show me a league anywhere in the world where more a couple of clubs have a realistic chance of winning the title. It seems that you are looking for a league where all the teams in it go into the last game of the season on the same number of points and the winner being decided not by goal difference or goals scored (because they obviously would be equal too) but by the number of coin tosses won at the start of the games.

Be realistic. Look at any league in the world game an you will see:
A couple of clubs will challenge for the title. If we are lucky a dark horse may run them close.
Most of the teams will fight over the middle positions.
A couple of teams will struggle to avoid the wooden spoon.

And that is exactly what we see in TAS NPL too.

Devenport, South and Olympia will challenge for the league title.
Knights, 'Boro, and Launnie City are chasing Zebras (this is an interesting challenge for the supporteers of those teams too)
And Riverside and Clarence will be doing their utmost to get ahead of the other to avoid bottom place.

Not every team will or can win the league, but every club is stiving hard and playing towards their goals for this season.

Don't rob the clubs, players, and supporters of their season just because they won't win the title.

Mountaineer

Finally someone making sense.

If you follow the argument of the other keyboard warriors saying that the NPL Tas is useless because only a couple of teams can win it, then we would have canned the league years ago.

Charles Calthrop said...

Thanks Mountaineer...very good summary. I would be interested for one of the many people who get on here, to complain that only three teams can win the league, to add some feedback on why they think that our NPL should be different to literally every other league in the world. There must be an underlying reason, because on the face of it our league is the same as everyone else. In NPL Vic there is a 33 point gap between top and bottom. A 26 point gap in NSW. 34 point gap in ours; mind you our bottom team only has 3 points. It seems to me there are a number of reasons to be critical of NPL Tas but the fact we are a mirror image of every League in the world doesn't appear to one of them...or is it? There must be something to the other side of the argument because it gets such a good run...seemingly all the time. Would love some feedback on why?

we cant sustain quality for 10 Team competition,

what has been said above is correct only a limited number of teams can win etc etc,

However look at the stats

Clarence 15 games
scored 4
conceded over 100

Bottom team VIC
18 Games
scored 30
conceded 53

NSW
16 Games
scored 10
conceded 23,

they are never going to win this year, but they also dont concede an average of 7 goals every game........

its not that you lose a game, you need to set a platform and a foundation that you can improve on year to year,
some teams have not done this and continue to swirl around the drain hole

Mountaineer, you have made some valid points. However, you say 'every club is striving hard and playing towards their goals for this season'. I think the big problem is that Clarence have been in this position for too many years now. They can't forever be working on 'this years goals'. There are so many quality players that play outside of the NPL. We have the players to support a 10 team NPL. Unfortunately, some clubs need to have a major re-evaluation, and FFT needs to support them.

You said exactly what I was thinking.
It's now how many many games you lose, but how you are losing them, and Clarence are just completely non-competitive against the top four.

This isn't quite right. Eagles had Clark sent off, two players subbed off injured and a penalty given in the first 20 minutes of the game. They went into the game with 8 senior squad members out. 9-0 is not a good result at any time but it was not just a send that lead to them "falling to pieces".
