Race is still on for Golden Boot Award

With the 2019 NPL Tasmania title already decided more than a week ago, the main point of interest in this weekend’s round of matches is the Golden Boot Award for the leading scorer.

Devonport City’s Miles Barnard and Hobart Zebras’ Mathew Sanders are tied on 27 goals going into this penultimate round of matches.

Barnard scored eight goals last time Devonport met bottom-side Clarence United at Wentworth Park and he revisits that happy hunting ground tomorrow at 2.30pm.

He could easily repeat the feat, given Clarence’s record of conceding goals this season.

Sanders will have a much more difficult task as Hobart Zebras are away to Launceston City at Buckby Land Rover Park today at 4.30pm in the ‘Italian Derby’.

Zebras will be without Adam McKeown and Jordan Muller, who both played last night in the 3-2 win over Olympia Warriors in the Challenge League, a result which handed that competition’s title to South Hobart.

“We’ll leave a couple of players behind [McKeown and Muller] and give a couple of kids a run,” said Zebras coach, David Smith.

“We’ll give young Alex Smith a run as he’s done really well for us.

“We’ll probably also play Luke Huigsloot a little higher.

“We’re struggling to get up at the moment [so it could be a tough game].

“We’ve been all right at training, but they’re always a hard team to beat up there.

“They get players back and you never know what they’ve got, but it’s more about looking at what we’ve got.”

Second-placed Olympia Warriors travel to Windsor Park in Launceston to take on second-last Riverside Olympic at 2.15pm today.

A win or a draw will ensure the Warriors of second place.

The remaining game of the round is at South Hobart Oval tomorrow at 2pm when third-placed South Hobart entertain fifth-ranked Glenorchy Knights.

This will be goalkeeper Dmitri Nester’s final appearance at senior level after an illustrious career.

South Hobart will be without skipper Nick Morton, who sustained a broken leg in last Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Kingborough Lions United, who have the bye this weekend.
