Devonport and South Hobart look the goods in the Summer Cup

How on earth did Clarence Zebras lose to South Hobart in their Summer Cup clash at South Hobart Oval on Saturday?

Clarence Zebras blitzed South Hobart from the kick-off and led 3-0 with not even half an hour gone through a Riley Dillon hat-trick.

Dillon opened the scoring in the first minute and added two more, in the 12th and 29th minutes.

The tide then began to turn and Rhodsie, standing beside me in the photographers’ possie at South Hobart Oval, said quietly:  “They’re panicking and they’re gonna lose this.”

Clarence Zebras had begun to play a dangerous game and their tackling became more and more rash.

That was highlighted when Sam Hills brought down Tobias Herweynen and conceded a penalty 10 minutes before the break.

South Hobart captain Nick Morton let Clarence Zebras off the hook by driving his spot-kick wide of the left-hand post.

But, Morton redeemed himself when he reduced the arrears by scoring in stoppage time at the end of the half.

That provided South Hobart with the life-line they needed and when Iskander Van Doorne made it a goal the difference in the 69th minute, it was game on.

Bradley Lakoseljac made it 3-3 in the 74th minute and the home side never looked back after that.

Herweynen netted in the 78th minute to put South Hobart’s noses in front and it was no surprise when Lakoseljac completed his brace 2 minutes from the end to give his side a 5-3 win.

South had two players cautioned  -  Jackson Dent and Lakoseljac  -  while Clarence Zebras had William Simaan sent off in stoppage time at the end of the game after he collected a second yellow card, and Dillon and keeper Josh Jones cautioned.

It was a costly exercise for the visitors as they also lost Argentine import Xuan Cappellino through injury in the opening half.

Kingborough Lions United continued their poor form when they succumbed 4-1 to Glenorchy Knights at KGV Park.

Lucas Dzelakowsi headed Knights into a 7th-minute lead, while Daniel Goodluck made it 2-0 midway through the first half.

Kobe Kemp reduced the arrears with a goal for the Lions in stoppage time at the end of the first half and the Lions also struck the post.

Goodluck restored Knights’ two-goal buffer in the 56th minute, while youngster Thomas Walpole completed the victory with Knights’ fourth 6 minute from the end.

Lions coach Alfred Hess started himself on the bench, but came on later in the game for Simon Vivarelli.

Knights were missing Nick Naden, Daniel Schmidt, Austin Yost and Hugh Undy, so their win was even more impressive.

Devonport Strikers continued their pre-season rampage with an 8-0 thrashing of Riverside Olympic away at Windsor Park.

Lachlan Van Neutegem hit a hat-trick, as did Spaniard Roberto Garrido, while Kieran Mulraney and Ali Dulleh each scored once in an impressive display by the North-West Coast powerhouse.

In the remaining game, also at Windsor Park in Launceston, Launceston City downed Launceston United 3-1 through goals by Toby Simeoni, William Humphrey and Joel Stone.

Aiden Rigby netted Launceston United’s consolation goal.

Hello Walter, did South Hobart make any half time substitutions? I unfortunately missed the game but interested to hear if that could’ve been the difference… what’s your opinion. Thank you.

At least two substitutions but it didn't make the difference as they had their strongest line-up on from the start.
Cheers!

Hi Walter - beg to differ about the effect that the changes Ken made at half time had on the match. He took Reilly Morton & Jackson Dent off and put Jacob Lancaster at centre back and brought Gus Higgins on at holding midfield. That gave the centre of the park a much more solid spine. He also dealt with the overload Clarence were achieving on South's left effectively. He brought young Alex Browne on out wide. A bit of hairdryer treatment for the team at half time meant they came out a bit more fired up in the second. Clarence couldn't keep up the pace of their pressing the ball for 90 minutes. That said, they were excellent in the first half, but it could've been 3-2 at half time still. Fab match for the punters. 8 goals, plenty of "passion."

Agree with anon 8:47am - Higgins was instrumental in the turnaround, winning aeriel duals & second balls and scrapping like the olden days, all of which goes unnoticed but it allowed the firepower of morton, lakoseljiac & the calgary flyer to take the headlines for a great comeback.

maybe i'm old school but he'd be one of the first on my teamsheet.

just my 2 cents.

Really Walter? I’m actually surprised that you were surprised

What is going on at the Den?
Losing players, returning to player coach which was ditched for a reason.
Complete shambles in the NPL and U21s
Lose a coach from the WSL and he beats them. Zero pressure on the TD/WSL coach, very poor
The club seems to have pushed away anyone from 5 years ago in any capacity. Sold out

Anon 7.48PM.
Finally someone else who has identified issues at Kingborough.
Club has improved in some areas but unfortunately on the field is where they lack .
In reserves NPL and WSL. WSL in particular . The squad of players they have had over the last 5 years should have won things. They are not improving that little extra bit that makes them great. They have 2 options. 1, leave things as they are and keep people happy, or 2, make some hard decisions and go after trophies. That is really what it comes down to.
You cant keep doing the same year after year and expect the results to change.
The NPL is competitive at times but not consistently nor are they good enough to win serious trophies. ( real trophies not summer cups ) Mid table side again.
The wrong players went to Kingborough for the wrong reasons a couple of years ago . That has resulted again in lack of success.
Sick and tired of people saying they have the biggest catchment area. They do but cannot seem to attract ( or produce ) high quality local players themselves.Been the same problem for many years. Again you cant keep doing the same thing over and over and expect different results.
The reserves have been a basket case for years finishing bottom or near bottom year after year. There has not been any improvement there either.

The summer cup is about giving fringe players opportunities and testing out new systems.

This is exactly what happened in the South v HZ game.

Some very attacking football from both sides and some woeful defending too!

All the players (whether they played well or not) will benefit from the game time.

I didn't think it was particularly great refereeing either. Dubious pens and a very harsh red in the injury time. Surely the kid could have been given a stern warning as the game had about 30 sec left. The tackle was very innocuous.

There aren't any prizes for winning games in Feb but there are good signs for both clubs. I think South will be the dominate southern team again. Not much will separate GK or HZ but KB are the worry. They have a serious lack of depth and look to be low on confidence already.

Not sure the Den has the best strategy moving forward. The ‘New Broom’ is sweeping out the wrong things. Questionable decisions thus far re player list. Also yet to be convinced re player/coach role. Experience shows that it is one or the other!
