Postponements in opening round of 2023 Summer Cup devalue Tasmanian Football

The 2023 Summer Cup kicks off tonight at Montello in Burnie when the home side entertains Somerset at 7pm.

I hope to post the result later at the end of this article.

In the NPL section of the Summer Cup, there are separate northern and southern sections and the action begins tomorrow.

Devonport Strikers host Launceston United at Valley Road at 2.30pm tomorrow, while Launceston City take on Riverside Olympic at Buckby Motors Park at 6.30pm.

In the south, Glenorchy Knights meet Clarence Zebras at KGV Park at 11.45am, and South Hobart’s showdown with Kingborough Lions United is scheduled for South Hobart Oval at 2pm.

In the other northern championship match, Devonport Strikers host Ulverstone at Valley Road at 10am.

Surprisingly, Launceston City’s game against Riverside Olympic in the championship section has been postponed.

I am told the reason is that too many of the young players are attending Party in the Paddock at Quercus Park in the north of the State.

The southern game scheduled for tomorrow between Olympia Warriors and Hobart City Beachside has been postponed for the same reason and will now be played on Wednesday, 15 February 2023, at Empire Couriers Park at 6.30pm.

Horses for courses, I guess, but I can’t quite get my head around such postponements for such reasons.

It devalues the competition and makes me wonder why anyone would take Tasmanian football seriously.

In the Under-21 Summer Cup tomorrow, Devonport play Launceston United at Valley Road at noon, South Hobart meet Kingborough Lions United at South Hobart Oval at 11.45am, Glenorchy Knights host Clarence Zebras at KGV Park at 9.30am, and Launceston City take on Riverside Olympic at Bucky Motors Park at 4.15pm.

In the remaining Southern Championship section, Nelson Eastern Suburbs play Taroona at KGV Park at 4.15pm, South Hobart meet Hobart United at South Hobart Oval at 9.30am, and New Town White Eagles are away to University at Olinda Grove at 2pm.

*****

Burnie United beat Somerset Sharks 2-1 at Montello tonight.

Burnie led 2-0 at the interval before the visitors pulled a goal back.

Jaiden Broome netted both goals for Burnie to get them off to a winning start in the 2023 Summer Cup.

I must admit in my day Walter I would have played with a broken leg . I guess these days the priorities are different.

Why do clubs enter competitions like this ?if players wish to go to a concert then the club should still be expected to compete.
If they don’t have enough players then a 3-0 loss is the result. Not a postponement.
This is a perfect example of the lack of management and organisation by one of these clubs that has just been dropped
from the NPL. Wouldn’t that club do everything possible to prove that they should not have been dropped?
Obviously says more about the management and organisation. Good luck surviving in the future.
The clubs that have agreed to a postponement should not have agreed either.
You nominate for a competition, you play. They should have insisted on a forfeit.

Rangers v City postponed not Riverside

Postponement is much better than a win by forfeit in this competition as it is a PRE-season competition to provide match practice.

Maybe ft should look at their scheduling ,you know that players hahave a life and football here is just social

What a bloody laughing stock football has become in Tasmania, players have a life beyond football??? They do not play football they are a disgrace to the game.FFT have got to be the most incompetently run administration in the world!!We are a laughing stock and to players who pull out of these competions are a disgrace to the game , either commit or piss off. Most of you are shit anyway!!

I follow your articles Walter .i am a fan of your articles.i disagree that postponed games devalue the sport.for a start the have been reschduled to another date in the championship.they have been reschduled to allow amateur players who pay regerstration pay for boots and all other equipment.pay to get in to games.play for enjoyment to have a game.the game is the peoples game and as such is for everyone.

8.49 am. Your argument is irrelevant.
Every player buys their o n boots etc, generally .
The game has been rescheduled? What if the opposition club
can’t field a team on the Wednesday? Di we postpone again?
You see you don’t get it.
If you commit a team to a competition you play or you forfeit.
Especially if you are a club that has just been dropped to a lower league , unfairly
as claimed by the club.
Wouldn’t you make sure that the club does everything it can to field teams
for every competition the club has entered?
Surely!

Two Southern Championship clubs decided not to enter the summer cup competition at all. Does this not devalue the competition? These are practice games to get teams ready for round one. That’s it!!
If both teams have numerous players away and both clubs agree to reschedule I don’t see a problem with it.

6.45 pm.
You are still missing my point .
Especially in respect to a club that was demoted to Championship.
Wouldn’t you want to make sure that you prove to those concerned that
they made a mistake in excluding your club from NPL?
That’s what I would do. Then again some may not give a toss and therefore deserve
everything that get. Some just don’t get it.

are you saying that by not postponing a summer cup game that their chances that Fft would certify their ground fit for NPL would be better? 🙄

Who says the request wasn’t from Beachside and Olympia just agreed to to?

Anonymous said...

7.53 because it came from Olympia not Beachside.
6.36 what a stupid question! It was not the ground issue alone which resulted in FT decision.
Having said that I don’t agree with the decision anyway and there is one person in particular who is to blame.
Everyone knows who it is .
