Uruguay completes the field of 32 for next year's World Cup finals in South Africa

Uruguay today became the 32nd and last nation to qualify for next year's World Cup finals in South Africa despite being held to a 1-1 draw at home in Montevideo by Costa Rica.

Uruguay had won the first leg 1-0 away in Costa Rica and today's draw saw them through on a 2-1 aggregate win.

Sebastian Abreu headed Uruguay in front in the 69th minute at the rain-drenched Monumental Stadium.

Walter Centeno equalised in the 73rd minute, but Uruguay finished the stronger and qualified for their first World Cup finals since 2002.

Did anyone see the Uruguay v Costa Rica game? I have never seen anything like it. The Uruguyan national anthem was sung by a man who continued for 5 minutes!!! It was beautifully sung, but it must have had four or five verses and just went on for ever and ever. The Costa Ricans gave up in the end and started to warm up in one half of the field as the guy kept singing, bringing the wrath of the home crowd on the visitors for their 'disrespect'.. Even the Uruguyan players were restless and started to move. In the end, when the singer finally finished the anthem, both teams returned to their positions to shake hands and pose for team photographs. Amazing!

The Kiwis aren't going to have the impertinence to subject us all to the tedium of the haka at every match in South Africa, are they?
