Kingborough sink without trace

In my preview for the weekend’s games, I used an ocean and shipping analogy in regard to Kingborough Lions United.

I said that one moment they were on the crest of a wave, while the next they disappeared in a trough.

Well, on Saturday, they went down without a trace against reigning champions Devonport Strikers at Valley Road.

The Lions were without striker Ben Hamlett and midfielder Andrew Taylor, while their coach, Jez Kenth, was indisposed and did not make the trip.

That meant they at least didn’t go down with all hands.

The Lions managed to contain Devonport for the opening half, which was scoreless, but goals by Eddie Bidwell and Brodie Denehey after the break gave Devonport a much-needed three points and third place in the standings.

Kingborough have dropped to fourth and the coming games will test their mettle and give some indication of whether they remain a serious title contender.

They also had defender Ahn Byungatae sent off following a straight red card.

South Hobart stayed top after disposing of Olympia Warriors 4-1 away at Warrior Park.

Olympia shocked the visitors with a goal in the opening minute by Joseph Mwarabu.

But, a header from a corner by Jacob Lancaster 10 minutes later made it 1-1.

Lancaster had to go off before the break because of injury, but he had done his job in midfield.

Sam Berezansky was unlucky not to increase South Hobart’s lead in the 17th minute when he smashed a free-kick from 20 metres against the Olympia crossbar.

Olympia’s Francis Kenyi squandered a great opportunity to give his side the lead in the 20th minute when he was put through on goal, but he delayed his shot and was dispossessed.

Two minutes after the resumption, a fine save by South keeper Nick O’Connell denied Joel Sammut and Olympia went behind in the 50th minute when Berezansky was on target to five the visitors a 2-1 lead.

Bradley Lakoseljac made the most of good service from the lively Kasper Hallam to made it 3-1 in the 71st minute, while centre-back Luke Bighin ventured forward for a corner and headed South Hobart’s fourth 10 minutes from the end.

South Hobart are narrowly on top on goal-difference from Glenorchy Knights, who easily accounted for second-last Launceston City 5-0 at KGV Park.

An own-goal sent Knights on their way, while two goals by Nick Mearns and a goal apiece by Cade Smith and Thomas Bellini completed the job.

Riverside Olympia, propping up the rest of the field, notched their first point of the season when they held Clarence Zebras to a 2-2 draw at home at Windsor Park.

Why can't Glenorchy Knights develop their own young players rather than throw money at everyone else's. Stop poaching players. Grrr!!!!!

Anon 4.06pm BBW What are you on about genius?

Wasn't that Ahn's second straight red card, or was his first red a culmination of two yellows?

If so don't you miss more games for a scenario like that?

So far a great signing for the Lions...
