Devonport Strikers continued on their merry way towards the 2022 NPL Tasmania title with a comfortable 5-0 win over bottom-side Riverside Olympic at home at Valley Road on Saturday.
The expected bloodbath did not occur and the 3 points were all that the Strikers wanted.
Nick Lanau-Atkinson put the Strikers ahead on the quarter-hour and Yasin Mohammadi made it 2-0 in the 21st minute.
Brody Denehey’s strike 5 minutes later made it 3-0 to put the game out of reach of the visitors, who were probably relieved to go in at half-time with only this small deficit.
Denehey completed his brace in the 76th minute to take the score to 4-0, while a goal 2 minutes from time by Henry Andrews completed the scoring.
Devonport must have been satisfied that their lead at the top of the standings stayed at 8 points over second-placed Glenorchy Knights, while Riverside Olympic limped home to Launceston not too badly damaged from this encounter.
Glenorchy Knights were far from impressive in beating second-last Olympia Warriors 2-1 at KGV Park.
Knights were without midfielder Jordan Muller, who had sustained an injury at training, and striker Kyle Vincent, the former Olympia player, who is out for the rest of the season after back surgery.
A draw was a distinct possibility throughout as Olympia went close to scoring on several occasions with shots that just skimmed the bar or were saved by keeper Reef Murfett.
The Warriors, in fact, took the lead in the 11th minute with a cracking goal from 30 metres. Knights gave the ball away after a throw-in on their right flank. Joel Sammut gained possession and passed the ball inside to Simon Vivarelli, who advanced on goal before unleashing an unstoppable drive.
The shocked Knights regained their composure and drew level within 2 minutes when Austin Yost took advantage of hesitant and sloppy defending by Olympia to score from close range.
The winner came in stoppage time at the end of the first half. Tyler Harrison kept a cool head and played his way out of trouble inside his own penalty area when under pressure and advanced three-quarters of the length of the pitch before releasing Adam Gorrie down the left. His low cross was turned home by Nick Naden for what proved to be the winner.
South Hobart did just enough to down Clarence Zebras 2-0 away at Wentworth Park.
Josh Divin fired them ahead on the half-hour and a Nick Morton penalty in the 64th minute made it 2-0.
South had another effort disallowed, while the home fans had a strong question mark about the opening goal in terms off-side.
Kingborough Lions United had to surrender home-ground advantage when their game against Launceston City was moved from Clennett’s Lightwood Park to Empire Couriers Park.
The Lions appeared to shrug that inconvenience aside and Kobe Kemp scored the opener after half an hour.
Launceston City fought back strongly in the second half and Albert Amankwaa made it 1-1 in the 57th minute.
With two minutes remaining, Stefan Tantari went on a long run through the left midfield and finished with a superb left-footed shot inside the far right-hand post to give City victory.
Just when Kingborough were starting to string together a fine run of victories, they came unstuck and revealed their inconsistency.
They had Argentinian winger Romero Vilar on the bench, while winger Phil Kantzos was also out through injury. Adam McKeown started on the bench, which meant the Lions were somewhat toothless and relying too much on Noah Mies up front.

Re: FT's latest annual financial report queried recently in a previous post.
The ASIC website has the 2020 FT financial report being posted on 16/02/2021.
The 2021 financial report is well overdue. As is the 2022 AGM. As is election of a new FT President. The silence on these three important matters is deafening.

Quite simple .
Fair comment. Complaining without action is tiresome. In fact things have been done about these issues in the past. The reason why 2019 and 2020 financial reports were finally placed on FT website was down to individual behind the scenes political lobbying/pressure. The issues surrounding broader governance (AGM/President) however are really only able to be dealt with by clubs doing the lobbying or organizing. (They showed they could be effective for example by getting some COVID relief payment out of FT.)
I think they did, bringing it to the attention of the masses through Walters’ blog. I had a look and can’t find that information either.
Agree Walt. Devonport Divers will win league comfortably.. They have a large player and coaching budget compared to the other clubs. Even big spending knights and Kingborough wouldbe a fraction of Dev outlay. We are becoming like the EPL on that regard. Maybe a salary cap is needed. ? Tough for other clubs to keep up.particularly with their ongoing help from the men with the whistle only makes it harder for other clubs .
Clarence spend more money on 2 player's then half the knights team.

Exactly right .And the worse thing is they go bragging to other players about it . Someone has posted before about the lack of opportunity the young players in Championship get with Clarence Zebras and they are spot on when they hear this and watch the rubbish dished up each week it must be very disheartening for them .
My god this Devonport Divers and supposed large player budget notion from jealous Southern types (and probably a few in Lonny as well) is getting tired.
Here's a good reason for their success - they work hard on and off the field, they recruit smartly, invest in good coaching, and have built a club local players (and a few now from up the highway) want to play at for the right reasons (not like some of the $$$ chasing mercenaries getting around the Hobart-based clubs).
Yep, they don't play the most stylish football ever seen in Tasmania at present, but there isn't another column on the NPL Tas ladder for style points.

i personally thinks the majority of leagues are done and dusted except for the Northern Men's championship in which a couple of teams can win. Devonport in the NPl Launnie United in the WSL, Ulverstone in the Northern women's Uni in the Southern women's and White Eagles in the southern men's.
It will be interesting to see how the leagues structures will be next year as there are a few rumours roaming around.
Im betting it's a Knights supporter. It's constant whinging against a great team. They don't dive nor do they get the ref's onside. It must be a pretty sad person to stoop so low to keep rolling out that rubbish.
Have to giggle when obvious knights players / supporters and most likely ex clarence players are talking about $$$ spent when knight have been the biggest spenders since their time in the champ - even then they spent more then the npl teams - to say that clarence champ players dont get a gig in the npl is another interesting comment go back through a few team sheets and see the difference between player movement across numerous clubs. Also for the typical under educated keyboard warrior - npl does have a point system which reduces player movement every five weeks - just for your info !!
