Oh for a Sunday NPL fixture for Round 4

The NPL Tasmania game-of-the-week has got to be the South Hobart versus Glenorchy Knights match at South Hobart Oval on Saturday [tomorrow] at 2pm.

Why, oh why, isn’t this match scheduled for Sunday when more people could watch it?

As it stands, the other NPL games in the south are on the same day.

Clarence Zebras host Launceston United at Wentworth Park at 2.30pm, and Kingborough Lions United entertain Launceston City at Lightwood Park at 4.45pm.

The time is satisfactory for Launceston United, who have to travel, but not so convenient for Launceston City, who will get home rather late after an almost 5pm kick-off.

If these two games had been scheduled for 2.30pm, and the South Hobart versus Knights game played on Sunday, I am sure more fans and players would have been happy.

I’m in the minority, I reckon.  Few people are as crazy as I am and wouldn’t bother doing what I intend doing, namely watch South Hobart versus Knights and then travel down the Southern Outlet to watch the Lions and Launceston City.

Football Tasmania would argue that Sundays are reserved for top-flight women’s football.

But, the Women’s Super League is an ersatz elite league and the South Hobart versus Knights WSL game could still be played on Sunday but at an earlier time.  Or it could remain at 2pm and the NPL game could be played earlier.

A men’s and a women’s top-flight fixture would be a real crowd puller, I think.

Well, that’s my view, but I don’t do the rosters.

South Hobart can go to the top of the standings if they beat Glenorchy Knights in the NPL fixture, but it will be a huge task as the Knights are in form and scoring a load of goals while conceding hardly any.  They have scored 21 in three outings and conceded just one. And, Knights have already beaten South 3-0 in a cup game this season.

Kingborough Lions United must beat Launceston City if they are to establish themselves as genuine title contenders.

The visitors managed a goalless draw away to Devonport last weekend, which is no mean feat, so they will be in with a chance.

Clarence Zebras have a realistic chance of earning their first points of the season against Launceston United and their fans will expect nothing less.

The remaining match of the round is at Windsor Park in Launceston when Riverside Olympic host reigning champions Devonport City at 4.30pm.

Devonport will be smarting from their draw last weekend, while Riverside will still be in shock after their thrashing by Glenorchy Knights.

Devonport can draw level with Knights and South Hobart on points if those sides draw and if Devonport win against Riverside.

Enjoy your weekend football, but the viewing may even have been better if the roster was more friendly to fans.

Sunday games are very inconvenient!

Unable to go away for the weekend, unable to go out on a Saturday night etc. Time to start thinking of the players! They are humans, not robots :)
