Southern Championship third round should be exciting

The third round of the Men’s Southern Championship begins at KGV Park tonight when eighth-placed Glenorchy Knights host seventh-ranked Hobart United at 8.15pm.

This should be close and toughly contested encounter.

Knights have lost their opening two games but they are playing good football.

They have shown themselves to be individually skilful and with new faces in the ranks they will need time to gel.

Their team work is promising and tonight may be the time to earn their first victory.

They will have to be at their best, though, because Hobart United are extremely fast and switch from defence to attack in the blink of an eye.

They also have very skilful players and, if their defence can remain solid, this is a game they can win.

Leaders South Hobart should have few problems against second-last Hobart City at Sandown Park tomorrow at 2.30pm.

City and fellow Italian-backed club Clarence Zebras occupy the two bottom places in the league, which would bring tears to the eyes of all local tifosi of Italian heritage.

Clarence Zebras are unlikely to break their duck at Clare Street, where they meet third-placed (on goal-difference) New Town White Eagles at 2.30pm tomorrow.

University, who are in equal four spot, entertain sixth-placed Olympia Warriors at Olinda Grove at 2.30pm tomorrow.

The Warriors are up one day and down the next and they will need to be on top of their gamer if they are to come away with even a point from Clare Street.

Equal second-placed Taroona will need to show what they are made of when they travel to Sorell tomorrow to face the up-and-coming  fifth-placed (on goal difference) South East United at 2.30pm.

The hosts are really impressive in terms of the commitment and tenacity and with the likes of Luke Huigsloot and Nick Zammit in their ranks, will ensure that the visitors have a tough time.

I believe the Southern Championship table will begin to take shape this weekend and we'll see where clubs are really at. Newtown, Uni, South Hobart, and South East challenging for the title. Hobart Utd, Taroona and Olympia being pretty average in the middle. Then poor old Hobart city, Clarence, and Glenorchy with only the chance of picking up points when they play eachother...
