University can go top of Southern Championship with win over Metro tonight

University take on Metro at KGV Park at 7.30pm today in a Southern Championship game that was postponed because of the Lakoseljac Cup.

University are currently second, two points behind leaders Hobart United.

Metro are third-last but a massive 14 points ahead of bottom-side South East United.

“We’re looking forward to this evening’s match,” said University coach, Jake Undy.

“Box-to-box midfielders Tom Roach and Patrick Watts will come back into the squad after resting over the weekend.

“They should be fighting fit and raring to go again.

“Club captain Toby MacGregor needs another couple of days’ rest after surgery.

“Toby is the best defensive midfielder outside of the NPL, covering our full-backs and relentlessly stifling opposition attacking moves.

“To adjust, we’ll flip it back to the double pivot and forward point that we used throughout the cup campaign.

“Sam Fahey will spearhead our attack and defensive press, with Kenny Trac and Matt Ling providing pace, creativity and determination from wider positions.

“Harvey Thorne will impact the game from the bench after an impressive hat-trick on Saturday.

“He has an unorthodox style of play which opposition teams have struggled to respond to when coming on.

“Harv’s persistence and positive nature has shown through at times when the team has needed it.  He’s another one that takes on big game responsibilities.

“The wind is expected to settle and the rain to clear up.  It’ll be excellent footballing conditions and we’re all ready for a boiler under lights at KGV tonight.”

Let’s hope Football Tasmania has fixed the lights.  There were still four of them on the blink last Sunday, so I’m not optimistic.

Meanwhile, Metro come into this game after their match against Beachside at North Chigwell on Saturday was abandoned by referee Charles White with 10 minutes remaining and with the score 6-0 in favour of Beachside.

An informant has told me that the trouble started after a Beachside player went down under a challenge and was then kicked in the head by a player running past.  Metro sources say the player was kicked in the chest.

This led to Beachside coach Brett Pullen coming on to the field and there was an altercation between him and Metro coach, Jayden Wiggins, who also came onto the field of play.

Pullen was shown a red card by the referee.

Home-team supporters then allegedly came on to the playing area and the referee called together his two assistants and abandoned the match.

The ball is now in Football Tasmania’s court.  I have reports that Pullen has been fined and suspended by FT.

Glad to see SE improving as a champ. side - they have strong youth teams and so a definite bright future.
