Launceston City the only Northern side left in Lakoseljac Cup

Photo:  Alex Walter gives the thumbs-up as he and former South Hobart team-mates Jack Bowman (left) and Oscar Thomas go to get changed for Glenorchy Knights' game against Northern Rangers.  Walter hit a hat-trick.  Thomas did not play, while Bowman was dominant in defence in a game that was often confined to one half of the pitch.  Perhaps that's why all the lights on one tower went off near the end, making one quarter of the pitch dimly lit. Only one team from the north of the State survived the Lakoseljac Cup round-of-16 matches yesterday.

That was Launceston City, who knocked out Devonport City, one of the favourites, with a 2-1 win at Buckby Land Rover Park.

Devonport has been one of Tasmania’s more prominent teams on the national stage in recent seasons after being league champions and cup winners.

These successes have propelled them onto the national stage in the FFA Cup and the NPL finals series.

Their elimination will have no bearing on their national exposure, though, because there will be no FFA Cup this year, and probably no NPL finals series.

The defeat must have been a blow to morale, however, especially now that Chris Gallo is back as coach.

Could we see a resurgence of Launceston City (aka Launceston Juventus) as a major force in Tasmanian football?  Only time will tell once the league season begins next weekend after such a long lay-off because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lakoseljac Cup-holders South Hobart are through to the quarterfinals after a 4-2 away win over second-tier Launceston United.

That scoreline is not impressive and to have conceded two goals could be a bit of a worry for coach Ken Morton, who has yet to settle on a goalkeeper.

Olympia Warriors sent a strong signal to the rest of the pack with a 10-1 demolition of second-tier Beachside at home at Warrior Park.

Ben Hamlett, signed from South Hobart, netted five goals for the Warriors, in a scintillating display of finishing.

Southern Championship league champions Hobart United came away from Somerset with a 4-1 win to go into the quarterfinals and they have now scored 12 goals in two outings in this season’s cup competition.

Glenorchy Knights downed Northern Rangers 5-0 at KGV Park, with Alex Walter scoring a hat-trick.  Two of his goals came from penalties.

Rangers were never in the hunt and looked like a second division side.

Clarence Zebras are in danger of becoming last year’s Clarence United since the merger between the clubs to form the new entity.  Their fortunes are beginning to go from bad to worse.

Yesterday, they succumbed 5-1 away to Kingborough Lions United at Lightwood Park.

By all accounts, Clarence Zebras goalkeeper Nick O’Connell had a nightmare on his return to his former club’s ground.  Returning to a former club can be a difficult experience for young players and this appeared to be the case for the custodian.

Taroona went behind to Metro at North Chigwell but equalised within a couple of minutes and then went on to win 8-1.

University did well to knock out NPL opponent Riverside Olympic 4-0 at home at Olinda Grove through a brace each by Tom Roach and Sam Platts.

The teams that will go into the quarterfinal draw then are South Hobart, Launceston City, Hobart United, Glenorchy Knights, Olympia Warriors, Taroona, University and Kingborough Lions United.

Fear not! The Clarence tradition continues.

Beach had a number of their starting 11 involved in the statewide 20s game. Not a true reflection of their quality for this season.

Why did beach not play their best 11 in the laka cup? Olympia are very vulnerable and have been easy beaten by knights and struggled against lton city although city look the goods also this year. Pity. Beach could have beaten olympia with their full squad. Shame.

Each club will prepare in its own way
And have had different pre seasons ( x 3) the laka cup post cv19 was originally rostered after round 4 then changed to before round one each club has different focus in a very different season
Let’s hope stage two doesn’t hit Tasmania the rest of the country is starting up again

If they can't beat Port U20's, doubt they would have beat Olympia NPL.
