There’s something appealing about a 12-team league. It has some substance to it.
I wish I could see more games, but my priority lies with the NPL Tasmania competition.
When I get the chance, though, I enjoy watching Southern Championship games.
Today’s programme [Saturday] is an interesting one, with league leaders Olympia Warriors playing old rivals Clarence Zebras at Wentworth Park at 2pm.
It looks as if Olympia have named some of their better NPL substitutes for this match and decided they won’t travel north with the NPL side, who play Riverside Olympic in Launceston.
Olympia lead the Southern Championship by 2 points from New Town White Eagles and must be keen to wrap up this title as the NPL honours appear out of reach.
Eagles meet Beachside at KGV Park at 2.15pm rather than at their home of Clare Street and this may make this contest a more even affair.
Given the big difference between the two teams on the standings, everything points to an Eagles win,
University, one of the title favourites, host Kingborough Lions United at Olinda Grove at 2.15pm and the Students should win this one comfortably.
University did not disgrace themselves against NPL opponents last weekend in the Lakoseljac Cup and they should be good enough to collect the 3 points in this game.
Hobart United are in fourth place and are the reigning champions and they meet Glenorchy Knights at North Chigwell at 2.15pm.
This game was supposed to have been played at Cosgrove High School, but the venue has been deemed not up to standard and so the game has been moved at very short notice (yesterday).
Surely Football Tasmania should have checked things out much earlier and not made a decision on the eve of the match?
South Hobart entertain Metro at South Hobart Oval at 11.45am today and should pip the visitors, who are second last in the standings.
The winner will collect the Steve Robins Trophy from Steve's father, Frank. Steve was a player for both clubs and when he passed away the clubs decided to award a trophy in his memory.
Bottom-side South East United are at home at Pembroke Park at 2.15pm against mid-table Taroona and will be hard pressed to stop the visitors from triumphing.
Taroona showed enough against NPL opponents Glenorchy Knights in the Lakoseljac Cup last Saturday that they should win this one.
