The Southern Championship season kicks off tonight with a game between Metro and Hobart United under the new lights on the new artificial pitch at KGV Park at 8.15pm.

Metro coach, Chris Chalker, with tongue in cheek, quipped:  “I hope we can finish the game.”

In the absence of fireworks to herald the opening of the new lights, let’s hope there won’t be any fireworks on the pitch in the game.

Games between these two clubs have often been hot-tempered and have even resulted in the constabulary being called.

I hope this won’t be the case tonight, but if there are incidents, the new lights should enable offenders to be readily identified.

Metro will be without Josh Newell, who has a knee injury that is likely to side-line him for six weeks.

Justin Hudson will come in as a replacement.

“Our reserves are pretty light on so I am hoping we can get 90 minutes from the boys after Monday’s effort,” Chalker said.

Metro lost 4-2 to Taroona in the Lakoseljac Cup on Monday.

“There are some sore legs in the squad after Monday and tonight’s 90 minutes will be a challenge,” Chalker added.

Metro will rely on the goalscoring prowess of Danny Cowen to get something out of this game.

Hobart United were without up to four first-choice players on Monday when they beat Somerset Sharks 5-1 in the Lakoseljac Cup.

If they have some of these back tonight, they will provide Metro with a stern test.

In games tomorrow, Taroona host Hobart City Beachside at Kelvedon Park at 12.15pm, South East United entertain Olympia Warriors at Pembroke Park at 2.30pm, while University are at home at Olinda Grove at 2.30pm  against South Hobart.

In the Women’s Super League tomorrow, Devonport Strikers are up against Clarence Zebras at Valley Road at 12.15pm, and Taroona host the reigning champions Launceston United at Kelvedon Park at 2.30pm.

On Sunday, South Hobart meet Kingborough Lions United at South Hobart Oval at 2pm.
