South East United looming as Southern Championship title threat

South Hobart became outright leaders in the Men’s Southern Championship when a late goal by Shin Kwanhoon gave them a 1-0 away win over second-last Hobart City at Sandown Park.

New Town White Eagles moved into second spot despite drawing 2-2 at home at Clare Street against the struggling Clarence Zebras.

Alexander Eliasson gave the visitors a shock lead 3 minutes before the interval but the returning Ben Whitehall put Eagles ahead when he struck twice midway through the second half.

Jeremy Price ensured Clarence Zebras of a point when he netted 9 minutes from the end to make it 2-2.

South East United showed they will be a serious threat for the title this season by demolishing Taroona 6-1 at Sorell.

Cooper Bain shocked the home side by putting Taroona ahead after just 2 minutes.

Jacob Sartori, Daniel Harris, Sam Sartori and Patrick Quinlan then responded with goals to give the home team a 4-1 lead at the break.

Dwayne Walsh and Luke Huigsloot, two of the most experienced players on view, completed the scoring for South East United in the second half.

University thumped Olympia Warriors 5-2 at home at Olinda Grove, with Daniel Goodluck and Kevin Reilly each scoring a brace and Gus Rumney adding a fifth goal.

Hugo Schwarz replied with both goals for the Warriors.

On the Friday night, Hobart United had trounced Glenorchy Knights 5-0 away at KGV Park [see separate match report].

Quite a few players $$$ and benefits had to be offered out to get South East to this point. Let’s see if they can keep it up.

Good on them. More clubs should show ambition

And Hobart city pay all the Regos for both teams and it’s getting them far !! It takes more then $$ give Sth east sone credit best coaching group in the champ by a country mile have retained the kids they developed and topped up with experience that can’t commit to higher level well played

Telling prospective players they’ve got an NPL contract for 2025 is an interesting tactic…

Yes, good on south east for promising 2025 NPL football when they do not have a licence. Laughable.

Bit like south and NSD

South East United ground doesn’t meet the standards,FA require so you are dreaming .

Not even Football Tasmania are that silly although their record not great !!!!

It actually makes sense for the east to move into npl far better candidates then Olympia , eagles etc

It is more of a statement on how badly football is going in this state that, it is even been considered south East United would make the top league

FTs introduction/removal of a team into the npl isn’t based around performance. It’s based around other criteria which is where south east and other champ teams come no where near close to.

South easts performances may have improved on the field but what they are doing off the field seems to be having a massive negative impact on members of the club.

Pretty sure they would beat Zebras, Launnie United, Riverside and give Launnie City a run for their money

Anonymous said...

But couldn’t defeat Hobart United on their home ground…

Anonymous said...

That’s not particularly saying much

Wow the tall poppy syndrome is alive and well.

The only thing thetcrr we oud need to do to the ground is put a fence around it like Wentworth park does mane what else is needed ? As far as club members not being happy - sounds like you left and are simply dummy spitting -

Anon 9.18pm .
You are dreaming.

Dont make me laugh, both Zebras and Riverside pumped them in pre season with second string sides.

I'm interested to see how SE goes with managing the big ego's who have arrived this year. SE have done an amazing job to build a committed core team, with a great chemistry, who came second in a tight competition last year. But they've added some players with big personalities and reportedly some people are unhappy with how much things have changed. If they can keep the squad happy, they are clear favourites.

If pumped in pre season is a gauge of anything it shows how little you know about the game
Sorell is the fastest growing area in the sth it’s obvious one of the Launceston teams will drop if not two and the game needs to look at growth areas and facilities
Let’s watch and see

Oh of course !
And all the people buying and building in Sorell play soccer.
Maybe you can use the new AFL stadiun as your home ground.

Once again the ground doesn’t meet the standard required it is that simple !

It’s about meeting the the ground standard’s results and living in a big area means nothing .

South East make better NPL candidates than NTWE? Eagles have won the last three league titles and consistently attract new players to their Champ squad (even from NPL) without offering anything other than a quality football environment.
