South Hobart easily beat Clarence United 8-0 in a pre-season friendly at South Hobart on Tuesday evening.

South led 3-0 at half-time and then changed almost the entire team and scored five more goals in the second half.

Ben Hamlett put South ahead with a penalty in the 21st minute after he had been brought down in the box by Clarence defender Mitchell Voss.

Adam Gorrie took the spot-kick and easily beat keeper Jake French.

Clarence then missed a great opportunity to equalise when Kane Hatcher broke clear, but he held on to the ball for too long instead of chipping the goalkeeper and was eventually dispossessed.

In the 33rd minute, centre-back Rasmus Philipsen headed home Adam Gorrie’s corner from the right to make it 2-0.

In the 39th minute, Morton exchanged passes with Gilly De Souza on the left and the latter chipped the ball inside the far right-hand post to make it 3-0 at the break.

South made wholesale changes for the second half and added to their tally 7 minutes after the resumption when Alex Leszczynski headed home Gorrie’s corner from the right to make it 4-0.

Centre-back Oscar Thomas ventured forward to hit home South’s fifth goal, again after a corner.

Alex Walter made it 6-0 in the 62nd minute, ramming home the ball at the second attempt after his first shot had been parried by French.

Jake Pullen added South’s seventh goal in the 70th minute from Walter’s pass, while Nick Morton completed the scoring in the 87th minute after some neat interplay with Thomas.

Clarence’s solitary chance in the second half feel to Hatcher, but his shot from the right flew straight at keeper Graham Wright, who was in goal for this game because Kieran Brown was injured.

Clarence had the experienced Paul Bremner on view, but were missing Paul Palmer, Jeremy Price, Matt Dyson, Odaine Demar and Lachlan Hardwick.

With the inclusion of these five, as well as Bremner, Adam Hedge and Sam Cannamela, they should have a more competitive side.

South Hobart coach Ken Morton noted that five of the goals came from set-pieces, which said something about Clarence’s defence.

Morton is right. I guess shipping 8 goals says nothing about the defence. Really?

At least it wasn’t ten that would have been embarrassing.clarence will turn it round once league starts

I watched the game and Clarence actually held there own most of the first half , they were clearly outplayed in the box from set pieces and they just could not match the height of the south attack in the air , south looked great in their passing game down the wing and are going to be very hard to hold out this year the young subs did a good job for ken as did the usual boys , apart from the score not all bad for Clarence either they lacked commitment but I was impressed with the little number 3 who broke Souths defence a few times and played some nice on balls , as did there young wingman who went off injured and came back on late a good prospect for them , if they get some of the players back they say they are they might win a couple, Kenny has nice depth in his squad this year and well I guess that’s what great coaches do . my tip is it’s South Hobart all the way this season

5 from corners and 1 from a penalty, clearly some crap defence from clarence but signs of beating a few of the weaker teams maybe ? A $70k + team V a $0 team , personally i wouldn't be crying if i were them at this stage of the year fellas , hope you save yourselfs from relegation boys sincerely
