Southern FC looked anything but the league leaders as they succumbed 6-2 to Glenorchy Knights at KGV Park tonight.

Southern scored the opening goal and the last, but it was all Knights in between with James Sherman and Jason Szoka each netting once and Tom Sherman and Phillip Balaban grabbing a brace apiece.

Knights should have led early on but Tom Sherman had one effort well saved by Southern keeper Samuel Pepper and he missed another sitter.

James Ruddell also missed two gilt-edged chances for the Knights before a quick counter-attack enabled Thomas Plunkett to give Southern a shock lead with a soft goal in the 17th minute.  Knights keeper Hugh Graham failed to hold a tame shot and Plunkett latched onto the loose ball to force it into the net.

James Sherman equalised in the 29th minute when he scored with a powerful free-kick from 20 metres.

Jason Szoka nodded home a corner in stoppage time to give Knights a 2-1 lead at the interval.

Phillip Balaban made it 3-1 two minutes after the resumption when his first effort came back off the right-hand post and he swept home the rebound.

In the 50th minute, Tom Sherman rifled home a free-kick to give Knights an unassailable 4-1 lead.

Balaban struck a post for the second time in the match in the 52nd minute as Knights continued to control the game.

Southern almost scored a second in the 62nd minute when the Knights keeper was caught out of position, but a desperate clearance over his own crossbar by Tobi Taiwo saved the day for the home side.

Another Tom Sherman free-kick made it 5-1 in the 87th minute, while Balaban netted his second and the Knights’ sixth in the88th minute when a nice change of pace put him through the Southern defence.

In stoppage time, Jonathon Fletcher weaved his way past several Knights defenders to round out the scoring with Southern’s second goal of the night.

Are challenge league players allowed to play div 2?
And interesting to see the crowd for div 2 nearly half of many NPL games down here!

That's the way the league is set up Knights have no other choice but to play their excess players there. I'm fairly sure eagles are in a similar situation with their young players in Champ 3.

Challenge can't play social on the same week, or at least that was the rule last year- I think you have to officially complain to get anything to come of it. So as long as those guys didn't actually play a game last week its fine.. Might have changed with the renaming of the league structure to come under the championship structure though
