Calvert out, Mies says goodbye, and Uni and Zebras force entry so women's game can go ahead

Greg Calvert has stepped down as coach of NPL club Kingborough Lions United.

The announcement was made by the club on their Facebook page.

The club thanked Calvert for his work and said a replacement would be announced soon.

Calvert joined Kingborough this season as senior coach after working as a youth coach at Olympia Warriors.

Kingborough were underachievers during Calvert’s short tenure.

They lie sixth on the nine-team ladder with just three wins, a draw and six losses from their ten games.

Last Saturday, they lost 4-0 away to seventh-placed Launceston City and that was probably the straw that broke the camel’s back, or to put it another way, the last straw for Calvert.

Noah Mies, Launceston City’s prolific young goalscorer, has joined Caroline Springs George Cross in the third tier of Victorian football.

The club are coached by former Glenorchy Knights player, Corey Smith.

Mies is the son of former Launceston City star Roger Mies, and grandson of one of the club’s founders and notable players of the past, Peter Mies.

Mies junior has scored 10 goals in 10 games and will be sorely missed by the Launceston club.

He joins other former Tasmanians Kobe Kemp, Liam Scott and Hugh Undy at the club.

What is going on at Football Tasmania?

KGV Park ground was locked when University and Hobart Zebras players arrived on Saturday for a noon kick-off in their Southern Championship women’s fixture.

No keys had been left at the shop next to the ground (this must be some sort of arrangement that is used) and so no-one could get in.

Eventually, someone used an angle grinder to cut the chains and open the gates so that the teams and supporters could enter and the game could go ahead.

Incidentally, University won 3-1.

Football Tasmania in one word "SHAMBLES"

Am I right to assume that a club (Zebras) that use the ground every week for training/games, don't have their own key to the lock on the gates and have to grab it from the shop next door? One would assume Zebras pay some sort of annual ground rental - surely that entitles them to a key or two for the coaches or club officials.
Or is this a case of someone from Zebras forgetting to leave the keys for someone else?

Hey Walt,
I Was under the impression Corey Smith was the manager of Caroline Springs George Cross? Formerly known as Sunshine George Cross.

Good afternoon 'Anonymous @ 3.38pm'.
Given my comments are fourth from the top, I'll take it you are talking about me.
Firstly, my comments aren't an explanation, just asking the question as someone who doesn't live the Hobart region and is not quite across how the set-up is with Football Tasmania and KGV Football Park.
Secondly, I can assure you I'm not associated with Football Tasmania. Just a fan who takes a keen interest in the game and how it all works in relation to a lot of other major sports in the state.

I wonder how Mitch Stalker feels being dumped now that the coach that dumped has gone?
Such a bad decision.

This news from Kingborough comes as no surprise to me. I have no doubt he walked. As far as his signings go most of them have been fringe players from other clubs with potential no doubt but not quite ready for 90 minutes of NPL action. This Kingborough squad by getting better will win games. The talent is there just needs harnessing and time.

I wonder wether some players will feel let down.having left clubs to go & play for Greg

Anon5.02 pm. You are correct. Most of the players are no NPL standard.
They should have improved or show some improvement by this stage of the year.
It boils down to level of professional attitude and application by all concerned from top
to bottom plus players signed must be players
required by the team for required positions.
No point signing players and imports for positions
you already have players for but still lack goalscorers
after recent years performances.
Who is to blame?

Maybe the aspirations of Calvert and the goals and expectations of the Kingborough board were not met.

Boro find it hard to get quality coach none in tassie free.should ask port they seem to identify quality coaches from mainland good at scouting

Kingborough should bring Markaj back!

Walter I have no idea why you and Rhodesy bother but without yourself and him football in this state we would be left with , Football Tasmania and to be honest a Dictator would be running the game in the State .
GOD BLESS YOU BOTH !!

Plenty of southern champ players from a number of clubs would help teams like kingborough be better and in turn improve the league.

A good coach should recognise this and do what they can to attract these players.

There’s enough quality just need forwards & Quality coach to put players in right positions for their correct formula

Football Tasmania set to appointed development officers the timing with this departure is right on cue !! If so Boro should be jumping up and down are Football Tasmania pouching senior coaches now ???

Try and name 3 championship players that could play npl?

Great to see talented Tassie youngsters getting approached by mainland clubs

Strong rumour is Noah Mies has a 3 week trial while City have no games
and that both parties will discuss at the end of the 3 week trial

City will struggle to score without Mies if he goes

Knowing what a dedicated, professional and superbly organised coach Greg is, and his earlier comments about working to a three year plan I suspect he has been pushed rather than jumped or other factors have come in to play. Would have loved to seem the squad improve under his tutorship over time.

What a load of codswallop below. If he was as you say he would still be coaching. He walked and left us hanging. I used to love him. Now if he asked me time of day I would just walk on by.

Agree with your comments entirely other than ‘ there is enoughquality’

> Most of the Uni team would get time for most of the lower half clubs, probably have difficult time poaching those players though because they like the club's social atmosphere, the lack of travel and the potential for a title this year. A couple of the Eagles guys could probably do a job, notably Sam Leszczynski and Ben Phillips (although not in midfield). You might get one or two from Metro (Robb?) and Taroona as well. They already got Cuthbertson from Beachside and Beach look much worse this year. These probably aren't game changing players but there are solid guys there. Maybe Kingo should target someone like Leszczynski who would offer something a bit different to what they have in Cowen.

Fahey from Uni, Sam L, ben Phillips and the wide player from eagles. There is a couple at Hobart untied I can think of but don't know their names.

Uni as the benchmark would have at least three in their squad alone.

Borough need to make right decision take time and find the special one like k Morton D Smith C Gallo top class coach .not middle of the road which they've had over the years

if championship players that good how did knights walk the league three years in a row.now mid table Npl

Much has been said about Greg C
Didn’t the board get together with certain people in the
off season and put together a coaching team that was
what the club needed ? Weren’t others pushed aside to make way for the
new team that was put together on the sly?
Didn’t the board allow this to happen? Where was the transparency?
Why did some young players with good future leave the club?
Didn’t the board agree with the process that was undertaken?
Wasn’t it the board that put In place the previous youth setup
which is now a proven failure?
Wasn’t it the board that appointed previous coaches who were
permitted to run their own show with no accountability to anyone?
It appears that the club has very serious issues it needs to look into
and if need be seek advice, ideas, opinions from others who
may have the experience.

Shouldn’t the coach be answerable to someone?

The situation with no one being there to open KGV is absolutely farcical. FFT is a laughing stock among all amateur sporting organisations in Tasmania. Even their website looks like something that would have been outdated in the 90s.

They are a train wreck of an organisation. They need a clean out top to bottom. Every other amateur sport in the state has top class facilities while KGV sits there looking more and more outdated every season. FFT have no vision.

Boro have No chance in getting Sammy l from Eagles as Ken Morton has been trying for years and Smithy tried this year to no avail.
Sammy L and Sam Fahey are the best two players in the Champ that could easily dominate NPL.

Complete disgrace by Zebras not opening the gate for their girls. If it had been any of there men's matches this wouldn't have happened. It's why we are struggling so much in the women's game...the big clubs still only care about the men. Maybe they could pop on here and except the blame. And NO...I am no an FFT apologist. We have plenty of other stuff to blame them for...but not this one!

Jeez, just give every club an angle grinder

Select players from Uni, New Town, Hobart United, Taroona, and Beachside, could definitely play NPL.

I am not saying by any means players from the Championship would 'dominate' NPL, but there would easily be a few from each team mentioned that would start for the lower NPL teams. I would even say a few could bolster the squads of the better teams. For example, Henry Fagg left Beachside and is now starting for Zebras.

A lot of these players have families/job commitments and can't train 3 times a week and travel every second weekend. Or, they love the atmosphere at their Championship clubs. Just because they don't want to play in the top league, doesn't mean they are not capable.

Anonymous @May 9 5.45pm, I think you’ll find they didn’t “walk” the league as you say. Speak to the knights guys and they’ll tell you they had to be right up for it against Beachside and Uni to get a positive result, all winning games against each other over the years. All coached well with solid teams. Yes, overall standard of NPL is better, but lets not run everything else down and scratch up accurate history to make that point

Players are happy in championship nice and easy suits us

Anon 11.49.
Please don’t suggest Henry Fagg was a player produced by Beachside.
He was a Zebra player for many many years before going to
Beachside. He learnt the game at Zebras

Is it true Academy coach has walked out at Kingborough.what's going on someone should release a statement even to walter

When did I say Beachside produced Fagg? It was simply an example of a player who was good enough in a Championship team (Beachside) to make the move to NPL (Zebras)... Which was made in response to the above person who said no Championship players could play NPL.
