Eagles can go to top of Southern Championship standings tonight

It’s great to have a decent Friday night game again this evening in what should be perfect conditions for football.

The disruption to the season caused by the COVID-19 shutdown made scheduling difficult, but now that we are back to something resembling normality, it’s good that there’s some second-tier football on the agenda tonight.

New Town Eagles are having a good season and they are second on the Southern Championship standings.

They entertain ninth-placed Kingborough Lions United at KGV Park at 8.15pm today and a win would see Eagles move to the top of the table.

Current leaders Olympia Warriors would drop to second, but with a game in hand, which will be tomorrow at Warrior Park at 4pm against fourth-placed Hobart United.

That’s a difficult game in anybody’s language, so Eagles will be striving to win tonight and put the pressure on the Warriors to perform tomorrow against the reigning champions.

Eagles will have Grant Nutting in goal as regular custodian, the young Jamie Cook, is out with a serious knee ligament injury which may well require surgery.

Nutting had previous experience in goal and should be a reliable backstop.

Former under-age State keeper Luke Ottavi will be in goal for Eagles’ Championship 1 side.

Eagles striker Sam Leszczynski has been sidelined with a hamstring injury and he would be a welcome addition to the line-up should he pass muster.

Third-ranked University are away at KGV Park tomorrow at 2.15pm against eighth-placed Glenorchy Knights and the Students should be up for the 3 points.

Fifth-placed Taroona are not out of the title race and they entertain sixth-placed Clarence Zebras at Kelevdon Park at 2.15pm tomorrow.

Only 2 points separate these sides on the standings so a tight contest should be in store with convivial drinks afterwards in the refurbished Taroona clubrooms.

Tenth-ranked Beachside, who have been disappointing this season, host seventh-placed South Hobart at Sandown Park at 2.15pm tomorrow and the tenants of what is known as ‘The Tropicana’ will find the going tough.

The bottom-of-the-table clash at North Chigwell at 4pm tomorrow is between home-side Metro and visitors South East United.

South East United, who are bottom of the heap, are coached by Glenn Rolands, who forged his career at Metro so he will know what to expect.

Mark Broadbent must be a little disappointed at how his Metro team have been going, but this should be 3 points in the bag for his outfit.

Eagles should finish up pretty strong they've only really got Uni left to play before the roster finishes, and that could a tight game, they've had a few narrow wins but points are points.

I heard that they'll split the roster after that with the top 6 playing each other once or something? Is anyone able to confirm that.
