Spanish magic keeps Devonport on top

Devonport Strikers continue to set the pace in the NPL Tasmania competition after a 6-0 demolition of bottom-side Riverside Olympic away at Windsor Park on Saturday.

That man Roberto Fernandez Garrido was again at the heart of the Devonport attack, scoring a hat-trick.

It’s now quite clear that to stop Devonport you have to contain the Spaniard.

It will be interesting to see if Glenorchy Knights can do this next Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Lakoseljac Cup.  If they can’t, they’ll be out of the competition.

Garrido gave Devonport a 38th-minute lead at half-time with a penalty.

An own-goal by Zac Reissig in the 58th minute made it 2-0 for the visitors but gave them nothing to crow about.  A penalty and an own-goal are nothing to write home about.

That changed when Garrido completed his brace in the 64th minute and as Henry Andrews netted Devonport’s fourth 10 minutes later.

Garrido completed his hat-trick 10 minutes from the end to make it 9 goals in 6 games for the Spaniard.

A goal in stoppage time by Nick Lanau-Atkinson completed Devonport’s 6-0 triumph.

Glenorchy Knights stayed in touch, 2 points adrift of Devonport, with a comfortable 5-0 away win over second-last Olympia Warriors at Empire Couriers Park on Saturday night.

Cade Smith  kept up his promising form with a hat-trick to show he is worth a starting spot, while former Warriors star Kyle Vincent and Nic Naden netted the other two goals.

South Hobart restored some much-needed morale with a 4-0 win over a disappointing Clarence Zebras at South Hobart Oval.

Sam Berezansky scored twice in the first half to give South Hobart a 2-0 lead at the break.  His first came in the 25th minute from a blistering low shot from the right that flew inside the far post, while he took advantage of poor defending to net his second on the stroke of half-time.

Bradley Lakoseljac made it 3-0 in the 73rd minute, firing home the rebound after a Nick Morton shot rebounded into play off the inside of the far left-hand post.

Morton completed the scoring with a penalty 8 minutes from the end.

Clarence Zebras keeper Matt Dyson made at least two brilliant saves to deny South Hobart further goals.

Clarence Zebras built up some promising attacks at times, but they failed to create clear chances when in the final third.

Kingborough Lions United deflated the Launceston City bubble with a 4-1 win over the northerners at Clennett’s Lightwood Park.

The win lifted the Lions into third spot and dropped City a place to fourth.

It was 1-1 after only 10 minutes, but the Lions led 3-1 after half an hour.

Another goal shortly after the resumption killed off any hopes of a City revival.

Noah Mies netted twice for the Lions against his former club, with Alfed Hess and Adam McKeown scoring the other goals.

Aaron Campbell replied for City.
