Kingborough Lions United had beaten New Town Eagles 6-3 the last time they met. That was at Lightwood Park.

Eagles coach, George Krambousanos predicted it would not happen this time, and he was right.

After a dull opening half in which the best chance fell to Kingborough’s Charles White, whose shot clipped the top of Michael Soszynski’s crossbar, the visitors took the lead midway through the second period.

In the 67th minute, Greg Freeman found a way past Mark Page on the right and beat Soszynski with a powerful low drive that zipped into the far bottom corner of the net.

Eagles’s best chance had come on the hour mark, when Jacob Kavanagh’s excellent shot was turned wide by keeper Jason Voss.

Five minutes after falling behind, Eagles were level when Adam McKeown headed home Kavanagh’s corner from the right.

Six minutes later, a free-kick from his own half by Wade Savage enabled McKeown to outpace two defenders in the inside-right channel and shoot past Voss to give the home side a 2-1 lead.

In the 84th minute, McKeown slipped the ball to the left and perfectly into the path of substitute Cormac Collins, who hit the back of the net without changing stride to make it 3-1 for Eagles.

Four minutes from the end, another Savage free-kick, this time from midfield, saw McKeown rise above the Knigborough defenders inside the box and nod the ball past Voss to make it 4-1.

The win put Eagles level on 12 points with the Lions, but they remained sixth and the Lions fifth because of the latter’s slightly better goal-difference.

Tim Dale was the stand-in coach for the Lions because Greg Freeman’s wife was expecting a baby that afternoon.

An interested spectator at the game was John Moriarty, the first Aboriginal player to be selected for Australia. That was back in the 1960s. Moriarty was in the South Australia state team that drew 0-0 with Tasmania at South Hobart in 1963.

  • New Town Eagles coach, George Krambousanos, said:

“There was no way we were going to lose 6-3 like we did last time.

“I was very confident. The boys trained well.

“Four brilliant goals, a hat-trick by Adam [McKeown], and we changed things.

“The lad that came on, Cormac Collins, scored a beautiful goal.

“But, it’s not just about individuals. It’s a team effort and the boys clicked very well and deserved their win.

“Kingborough fought well.”

  • Kingborough Lions United’s stand-in coach, Tim Dale, said:

“I think we’ve been punished for two things.

We’ve been punished for not making the most of our chances and then we’ve been punished for when we’ve made mistakes at the other end.

“A combination of the two. Obviously, you need to take your chances and, if you make blues at the back, then teams can score against you.

“Pretty much, I thought we had a good piece of the game. We looked compact and went ahead, but then mistakes sort of let us down.”

Goal keeping was the difference, while Soszynski was making great saves consistantly, Voss had his moments, but made crusial errors on 3 of the goals.. what is kingboroughs reserve goalie like? sure must be time to give him a chance.. the centre back pairing doesnt seem to be working either.

yeah it was good to see lions flogging eagles again and um ah......oh wait not what everyone was thinking, and i assume charlie hasn't heard the result yet, otherwise he would be saying how pathetic eagles are. what helped eagles i'm sure was the influence marchioli had when he came on- coincidence the goals came flooding in right on his arrival, minus the first. maybe he is still recovering from the issues he suffered while lions had their road trip to launie....

Hey eightball, at no time did I criticise Eagles, what i did say was that before the game yesterday we had lost only 2 games and Eagles had lost 5. Now it is 3 and 5. I thought Eagles were well worth the points and I told a number of them that after the game. I have not criticised one team on this blog and as I have previously said it is the most even competition I have played in and therefore the most enjoyable, although I did not enjoy the result that we suffered yesterday! Eagles well worth the points.

Sub..... yes the skill level in keepers varied but thats not to take away the effort from the other players.. especially Mckeown who thouroughly deserved his 3 goals and set up collins brilliantly for the 4th....great effort by the eagles lads to come back from 1 nil down!! contenders for final four!!
