Season launch and new CEO announced

The 2010 Forestry Tasmania Premier League season was officially launched at Football Federation Tasmania headquarters at KGV Park this evening.

FFT president Sean Collins hosted the proceedings and, after asking each Premier League club captain and coach some questions, presented them with an obscure old book, pamphlet or brochure, most dealing with forestry topics.

Collins prefaced his questions with famous quotes from leading football personalities from the United Kingdom and used these quotes to lead in to his own questions.

That was fair enough, but the items presented to the player and coach of each club must have been a joke.

Perhaps I just don't get the Irish sense of humour, but it seemed as if Forestry Tasmania were having a clean-up and discarding items from their library.

Let us hope the league is a little more serious.

Michael Wood, an official from major sponsor Forestry Tasmania, delivered a speech extolling the virtues of the world game and said it was the second most popular football code in the State.

Wood said there were 14,000 registered football players in Tasmania and he was delighted that Forestry Tasmania was continuing its sponsorship of the game in both the north and south of Tasmania.

The captains and coaches of the eight southern Premier League clubs were presented to the gathering.

Players from several of the women’s Premier League clubs were also in attendance but , strangely, were not formally introduced.

Collins announced that Patrick Barlow was the new FFT CEO.

Barlow, who runs his own advertising, marketing, public relations and sales firm called Jacaranda Communications, would start work next week.

“I am excited,” said Barlow. “If there’s ever been a job that’s been made for me, it’s certainly the CEO of football Federation Tasmania.

“I think the first thing is to just start the position, which is next week, get to know the staff.

“The first month is really to see where the light switches are, where the pens and paper are, and just whether the format is working.

“But then I think with my marketing and public relations skills, I think that can be put to good use to take soccer to a stage further.

“It is the number one world game and I’d love it to be the number one world game here in Tasmania.”

While the launch was in progress, South Hobart's reserves were beating the Tasmanian Institute of Sport 5-1 on the KGV pitch just outside in the first of the regular Wednesday night matches in which the TIS will play Premier League reserve sides.

Jim Pennicott and Andy Brennan each scored twice and Pat Donohue once for South Hobart.

sad to hear that the women premier league players were not introduced.

The clubs and players are trying to do the right thing ......and FFT dismiss it like an oily rag !

What a disgrace !

Not sure Mr Collins knew all that much about what was organised or that the occasion had been thought about all that well.

Sad really.

Gee haven't Jim Pennicott and Andy Brennan (both 16) progressed since they were overlooked by the TIS.

Board room i would say stick to Mr.Collins, but aparently maybe not.

Refereeing i will give benefit of the doubt, just like a player your form is early.

All the best for 2010 i wish.

Looks like Ivan has been in a good paddock in the off season!

With his decisions being some of the worst out there when he could actually keep up with the game, I can only imagine how many shockers there will be now...

The premier league women were not introduced, shame, shame, shame.

Surely we could have had a State wide launch, we are one State after all.

Where was the media pack? where was the press release? which media were present, invited? why are the general public not invited? where was the big bang? where was anything?
Then again what do we really expect, after all it its FFT :)

So we have a new CEO, if he is serious about the role. Guess his business is not doing that well he had to take a second job :)

Look forward to reading his interview Walter, about his background, experience and plans for Tasmanian soccer.

How many were in the stands watching the game? why were the two events not linked so launch then game or launch then game?

Did not see the game publicized?

what a joke, knights didn't even wear their club strip? lol

women's players not being introduced is a disgrace and the coverage they receive is a disgrace

walter, would you place women's match reports on the web if they were provided?

TIS vs South game was good, both teams not playing to their best but south did enough to get a win. Andy Brennan looking in very good form. Luttmer and Abbott looking strong at the back.

Did anyone else find it highly amusing when the guy from Forestry commented on how brilliant it was to drive down the Brooker Highway and see all the kids playing Futsal @ the hockey centre! LOL

Rather large blooper.........

Very poor performance by FFT , once again.Very unprofessional indeed. If I had the money to offer as sponsorship to the league , I think I would rather spend it on a holiday. It is no wonder the sport cannot attract a serious sponsor for the state.Just goes to show ,by his comment re Futsal, how much the Forestry Tas representative knows about the sport in Tasmania .What a joke.
If it wasnt for the many volunteers at all levels ,putting in their own time in keeping the sport alive in this state ,
god knows where it would be.
It is almost dead and buried now.

Anon 12.51pm I agree both teams didnt show their best but South based on scoring opportunities alone (12 to 3)and greater fluency were the better side. Also I cant see how you could say that anyone in the TIS defence looked strong! Brennan and Pennicott were mostly outnumbered but they pulled the TIS defence out of shape all night.

Both teams didn't play there best, but no doubt who were the better team on the night. The TIS vs the TIS rejects, State vs MSS...and the winner is 5 1.

Gag, yr a bit harsh on the youngsters I reckon - I suspect it was a rare case of nerves seeing as it was the start of the TIS challenge or whatever this comp's been dubbed by FFT. After all, South Hobart's chock full of young talent including quite a few who missed out on scholarships and a couple of ex-TIS athletes who were cut from the program all who have benefitted from Kenny Morton's coaching. I'm sure some other Premier Reserves sides will find the TIS difficult opposition.

it's actually (and simply) the first game of the Premier League reserves for points and ladder position.

Based on summer cup, not every reserves team will walk away with a win vs the TIS.

I'm also interested in where the TIS girls are playing. They are not in the Premier womens.

birdman, for me it just proves that a squad based TIS program is a waste of developmemnt $$$'s.

RE - Did anyone else find it highly amusing when the guy from Forestry commented on how brilliant it was to drive down the Brooker Highway and see all the kids playing Futsal @ the hockey centre! LOL

Its been cleared up the confusion started when the Forestry guy was heading down to give a sponsorship deal to the local futsal org. and got lost in the pine trees , was soccer napped by a diehard and misled into the wrong building hence his foobar on the speech haha.
Or maybe he has more forsite than us that cause division between the two and wont accept its all the one game but different variant -- maybe he is but a wise man afterall snigger snigger

Sounds like the Olympia Warriors presentation at the PA showroom was a lot more professional than the FFT launch? Any one go to both?

where were the warrior women ? staying away from KGV after 6-0 smashing by TIS ?

TIS beaten by a team choc full of young talent?????

What is the TIS meant to be - Half full?

Ken Morton must be laughing all the way to the bank.

Anonymous said...

Anon Based on Wednesday's performance, TIS does look half full. Unfortunately TIS has had to include some less than the best to fill it's squad as some have preferred other development pathways.

would seem the biggest impediment to the development of the women's game is Tassie is.............

FOOTBALL FEDERATION TASMANIA

they are the biggest impediment to everything football

I dont understand why the TIS can lose to a south team the same age as them. Shouldn't the TIS be beating a team like that. Obviously Ken's coaching is better than Dean's, Morton for TIS coach?

great to see all the positive comments after completion of the summercup.fft members are allready knifed and suffering severe bloodloss.the referees have allready been condemned.we complain about not having enough referees and then kill the few we have.no matter how brilliant or stupid fft is it is still up to people like us to actually do positive things for the sport, fft cant do it for us.chiefs need little indians to do the work.

melikesfootball said...

I second Jerrie's comments!

Its about time we accept that we are not the EPL, we are a small state with 500,000 people trying to play a number of sports.

If you don't like what's going on with football in this state, then either get over it or get out. You can always choose to start a rebel competition and see how many people choose to play, ref and support. Maybe then you will realise that FFT do a reasonable job with the resources they have at their disposal. And before you ask, No I am not or ever have been an emplyee of FFT.

Anonymous said...

me likes football,

lets just say there are several people in this state tthat could infact run a competition better and would be able to do so if the government was smart enough to not invest all its money into a 2nd rate organisation,

be careful what you wish for, rebel competitions are a good idea!

Do you know what resources FFT has available? Plenty! They've not skint judging from their annual report. It's a case of priorities and I sometimes wonder whether they have their priorities right. They have about 7 full-time employees and that's a lot. They could run a better show than they do with all these people and the money that they have available. Perhaps new CEO Patrick Barlow can get the game up and running.

melikesfootball said...

So why do people choose to play in the competition than is run by FFT?? I don't care who runs football, as long as football is available to the Tasmanian public to either watch or play.

I went to the South Hobart v TIS game to support South Hobart. I think this TIS bashing serves no useful purpose. The average age of the TIS players was a couple of years younger then our players but their technical ability was more advanced. The TIS concentrated on keeping possession whilst we were constantly reverting to long ball and chase. I think South Hobart and TIS will prove to be the two top teams technically in the PL reserves and I look forwarding to next time they play.

In one of my earlier posts I referred to an" amateur" league that was often talked about but never came to anything .

Why?

All talk and no action plus obtaining a suitable inexpensive venue .

If these hurdles were overcome we would see a " PUB" league.

Well said Floater, I couldn't agree more with what you said, I too was at the game and thoroughly enjoyed watching 2 very good teams. The eldest couple of T.I.S. players are a similar age to Souths Youngest couple of players, so I would expect South to win. having said that the T.I.S. boys did play the better football albeit not as direct or effeective as the South game. Why do we have to bag the T.i.S. boys at every possible moment, they've done nothing wrong

Greg Ludford said...

You're on the money Floater.
2 very good & fast sides produced an excellent game on the night. Either side could win the odd PL game. TIS showed some excellent technique but little attacking flair, no overlapping wingbacks, very static in their positions up and down the field (maybe to do with FFA directives wrt the Dutch system?) Either way some great talent on display from both sides. Also, there's plenty of defences in Tas that would be pleased to turn around and see "The Monc" in goal !

"souths youngest couple of players"

Most of South's outfielders would've been 16. Downes in not long 17.

As one of the Women's Premier League coaches, having been invited to attend with our captain - who had been asked to attend in full playing kit - it was embarassing to have the women overlooked.
Only after someone said to Sean "what about the women?" did he look confused, describe them as a "lovely surprise" and get them up the front (but no introduction).
Not a great look.

How Brilliant are the two young forwards from South Hobart. Andy Brennan and Jim Pennicott are a FORMIDABLE force!
