South Hobart won their first trophy of the season when they beat Glenorchy Knights 4-0 in the final of the southern Premier League section of the Summer Cup competition at KGV Park on Saturday night.
Knights offered little resistance on the evening and South goalkeeper Sam Kruijver had little to do.
Former Knights player Jonathon Ladic gave South Hobart the lead on the half-hour to make it 1-0 at the break.
Tom Roach added the second seven minutes after the resumption, while Kostas Kanakaris made it 3-0 in the 62nd minute.
Kanakaris put the icing on the cake when he grabbed his second of the night and South’s fourth in stoppage time at the end of the match.
South Hobart are primed to have a highly successful season in this, their centenary year, and on Sunday they are due to play in the semi-finals of the northern Steve Hudson Cup competition in Launceston.
They were to meet fellow southerners Taroona and were highly favoured to win and reach the final.
If they win that, it will be two trophies from two starts and the season proper has yet to get underway.
Their pre-season preparations under coach Ken Morton were thorough and included games in Melbourne against South Melbourne, and also in Wollongong.
It would not surprise to see them make a clean sweep of all the trophies on offer this season.
“We played well and controlled possession and had territorial advantage,” said Morton in regard to the final against Knights.
“I was happy with the performance and, obviously, the result.
“We’re delighted to have won the competition and we’re hoping we can now push on and win on Sunday and make the final of the Steve Hudson Cup.
“It capped off a great night for the football club as our reserves had a resounding 3-0 win, too.”
Andy Brennan netted twice and Jo Yeong-Sun once as South overcame Glenorchy Knights 3-0 in the Reserves Summer Cup final.
The Women’s Summer Cup final saw the Tasmanian Institute of Sport trounce Olympia Warriors 6-0.
Rani Cavaretta netted twice, while Brooke Mason, Jessie Williams, Lucy Foote, with a penalty, and Ellie Gavalas collected a goal apiece.
In the Division One Summer Cup competition, Beachside and Hobart United qualified for the semi-finals from Group B.
Beachside downed Northern Suburbs DOSA 3-1 through two goals by Bernhard Klasen and one by Brett Pullen.
Hobart United grabbed second spot in Group B with a 4-2 victory over University.
Peter Otto, with two goals, Akuel Guot and Samson Rume were United’s marksmen.
Metro will be one of the semi-finalists from Group A as they top the group and play the struggling Huon Valley at home at North Chigwell on Sunday.
The other semi-finalist from Group B will be either the Tasmanian Institute of Sport or Nelson Eastern Suburbs, who meet at North Chigwell in the main fixture on Sunday.
A win for either will put them in the semi-finals.
The other semi-final in the northern Steve Hudson Cup competition on Sunday is between Ulverstone and Prospect Knights.
Riverside Olympic meet Launceston United and Northern Rangers take on Launceston City in the remaining matches in that tournament.

TURN IT UP... humble pie... blah South were better yeah, but the knights were not on there A-game. Seriously none of them, I was frustrated watching! Fish showed heart, also danny, but with corey sprouting off, Army never in the game, Holmes looking tired, blonde shermen looking not interested in the 2nd half... plus formation changes every 20 mins didn't help. pushing poo uphill already!
4-0 wasn't a true indication, some basic keeping errors with the last two goals, Tatnell needs some positioning training... from were i was at the bottom end goals the wall was clearly set up on the wrong post. Maybe ben could get out of the coaches box and do better elsewhere. Big wake up call for some of them, i'll be the 1st to tell them. Season will be closer than last nights result.

Which ground were you at anonymous?
Hernane Caires ( BRASIL ).
you are so right anonymus,a bit of advice delivered in the appropiate abusive manner does wonders to build a young keepers confidence, the old saying is still true if you want a job done well you have to do it yourself.
Its a great effort to go through the summer cup without dropping a point or a goal.
I can't see many teams troubling South this year. It was boys V men last night. Jon Lo and Tom Roach are huge additions to an already strong squad.
Knights missed Eamon prowling the touchline. Their team looked unfit and they were over run in the second half. Four lashings of the cane was deserved punishment.
South reserves would finish in the top 3 or 4 of the SPL based on current standard.
One horse race in 2010
First half was the indication of how Knights would be, fitness really proved a problem for them in the second half. South havn't stopped training, what can we all expect?! Tatnell hurt Knights last night, big time. Shit wall, shit game. Fielding, Sherman, and Huigsloot all showing plenty of heart, unfortunately that was all last night. South Hobart played well, but that's not the best we will see from Knights, not at all. Sean Collins seemed a bit dubious in one or two of his calls.
Any photos from last night Walter?
there is no doubt i believe that k nights should be in the top half of the league by years end, but maybe it shows the other teams strength in souths group with eagles/olympia/zebras. they may not win the league, but it shows that all teams aren't out of calculations. knights dominated their draw and didn't look like losing. i certainly don't think south are a 4 goal better team. everyone needs to get the perception out that south are unbeatable. theyhave a lot of scoring options but didn't use them as properly as they can YET. got some feedback on the game, and i don't think it was that biased the info i received, except for the refereeing. but not even the worst ref could be responsible for 4 goals
well done South it shows the good guys can be successfull.
less huff and puff and more craft. who knows if teams start playing that way people may start coming through he gate.
some teams concentrate too much on stopping the other from playing.
I don't think South are the finished article either....yet so they too will improve.
knights not on their a-game anon poster no1? why do you think that was the case? maybe because south didnt let them play their a-game, let alone any game at all...there's always gripes about the ref, get over it.
corey and amadu never in the game because sth too good defensively. danny needs to be playing in attack and maybe corey in midfield...tatnell was shocking. heart in my mouth everytime he went near the ball.
and please can everyone stop offering up "sth have been training since the end of last season" as an excuse...nobody barred the other clubs from putting in the hard work early on and reaping the rewards.
armadu needs to be dropped
I heard a rumour DOSA might drop to Div2 this year..due to a lack of players..any idea Walter?
Forget about Amadu being bad how embarrassing was Sherman. Expected a little more personally.
All the hype little produced.
Taroona will get closer to beating south today 100%
nothing much said about souths news jerseys.
who do they think they are? barcelona? bit arrogant for mine.
Like the stips i did, future bright for them it is.
Re The Shirts .
In keeping with the 100th anniversary the shirts are a facsimile of those worn just after WW2. ( approx 1/2 a century ago)
George Lawler ex SHSC , Metro has an original.
I don't expect many of you would be aware of the above.
For a close up of the shirts check the SHSC website.
am sorry to say this but it was a good game until sean started makin silly decisions he really did spoil the game.south were snapping half the knights lads and no free kicks were awarded and as soon as knights started doing it back sean was giveing them free kicks left right and centre the knights heads then started to drop and the game just got worse from there. The very poor refing had a massive inpact on this game i think nearlly all the knights lads got booked and not 1 from south the standard down here isnt to great to start with and poor refing is just guna make things worse.
mmm knights very unfit slow had a sprinkle of youth that was underutilised when you had fish and hope looking like they were buggered after 25 minutes 'grundy and huigy may well run at brick walls for the team but to clear the ball to your opponents feet or put the ball out of play you may as well just give the ball to the opposition .time to go googsy no disrespect been a good player.maybe keeper overated as well very cocky.anyone care to rate the shermans game and koromas game .will they hold spots.
All Knights were ave. So much pre-game talk! Quiet now... Shermen's both talented but yesterday look 2nd rate at best against south. maybe didn't want to wreck thier hair! kormana needs to drink some concrete powder, tatnell is a ballerina in football boots, crumbles when tested. Hope looked overweight, smith needs vallium before he plays, grundy over the hill. The young kids that came on worked hard but players around them didn't help.
tatnell only 17 and only started keeping 2 years ago? bad games happen
so knights now reckon ref won the game. get a grip at look closer to home you mob of windbags!!!!!!!
Taroona will indeed as has been suggested be competitive and if they can win maybe 5 games will maybe avoid relegation.
unlike knights they will be realistic and do their talking on the pitch.
South strips were a welcome return to tradition and why anybody would suggest it was arrogance by having similar colours to Barcelona is petty and very childish.
I don't remember anyone suggesting that when they wore the same strip but were not winning tropies.
the green eyed monster I suspect.
Brain. I remember wearing the red and blue stripes with pride in the state league during the 90's.
good to see the return of the tradition in this historic year for the club.
Knights were just in terrible form.. no point in saying that the ref won the game for south hobart cause it was obvious that they were so much better prepared than knights! Tatnell seemed as if he didn't want to be there as he hardly even try to stop a ball. seemed as if he had better things on his mind to do on a saturday night.. word to the big boy get your head in the game and start playing proper football!!!
good to see scott had an opponent again.. totally free down the left all game. should have scored a couple. What are south doing for away strip? interesting to see the ground has been altered? FFT did a poor job of advertising the game, surely a bigger crowd could have been.
It is interesting that the TIS women were permitted to take the trophy.
Recent history has seen FFT denying Rep teams from being made champioms when playing in competitions.
Talking about the trophy - were was it? A dinky little piece of timber presented to South Captain. Another disgrace for FFT in football managment. Regardless of winner cup should have been there.
Just watched the Video highlights on South Website - seems to show that the score board showed the deserved winners - without any help from the ref. www.shfc.org.au
Anon 8:41
Totally agree.
We left the groung disappointed at the score, and asked ourselves the same question, why did knights only play with 8 men. No right midfield, no right back, or no defensively minded striker.
Surely they would have started with 11, in a final
17 or not there would of been a few out there at that age. all have to deal with the pressure, obviusly some handled it better than others.
just watched the vision - keeper was well positioned, the wall was not.
he was fine with the rest of it. last goal wasn't the end of the world. in fact the defender was more to blame. sth walking the ball around in there.
just because he's tall, doesn't make him a poppy
Hmmm, goal keeper beaten at near post, free kick given away for handling outside box, free kick scored past the wall, and the 2nd goal went in the middle of the sticks.
Anon 4.08 but apart from correct you are
haha - yoda, let's see you save any of those.
he wasn't the reason they lost. they were poor everywhere.
i believe this result just proves the leauge is dead, south winning 4-0 against knights who are stronger now than what they will be during the season when they lose a couple of players proves this, look at div 1 my 5 year old son could get a game in that leauge, its time for a total new leauge and dont have reserves anymore just have seniors and say a youth team under 19 as this will spread players around clubs more and make the leauge stronger, the only other solution is to promote south hobart ressies to give there seniors a game as know one will get close to them
Scott and ladic played well down the left, was interesting to see clay moved to their left side? Looked unfit. South looked like a well oiled unit, with crosses from the left coming in huge numbers. Will knights struggle even more when their "star" player leaves... Might want to consider playing well in tas, before going overseas. Kelly was missed, but knights terrible all night. I expect knights to come out firing next week in the first round.
Allan ,
One of the difficulties we as a football community face is that instead of being spread around the dispossessed play for the social team with in the club structure.
Can either of us name a Reserve player who would move to div 1 when he can play for our 3rd team with a prospect of breaking back into the senior XI.
If he doesn't make it there is always next year.
I agree with Allan about getting rid of reserves and having just two tiers. It would work for both Premier League and Div One where it seems a couple of clubs are struggling to get the three teams to make it viable. It's interesting to note that teo tiers was the proposal put forward by FFT duing discussions for the last re-structure (Seniors and Under 21's) in 2007 or maybe 2008. However the clubs didn't want it - maybe it's time to revisit that proposal
Hmm me thinks that i wouldnt handle the ball outside the box. So theres no free kick there. :(
Anon 4.26 and he did get a hand to the near post one, but that makes it worse.
They probably will strugle more when their "star" players leave. But 1 or 2 players a team does not make. South example of this they are. Anon 4.49
i am very sorry for my performance, i especially want to thank my head band for having worse performance than me

all in all, south outplayed tthem in every position and knights can get a lot better, probably couldn't have gone worse for knights, early goal for south which broke confidence, spiralled from there
Anon 5.19 , I disagree with your comment re the current 3 tier system. It is working among all the premier league clubs. It sounds like you are from a Div 1 club that is struggling to meet the criteria.Stop looking for an easy way out.
The Div 1 clubs need to get off their backsides and put together a junior program so that in a year or two they will be able to comply with the 3 tier system. If they are struggling to comply , forget the promotion /relegation issue and for the next 2 years, concentrate on attracting 15 or so 16 year olds, and play them in the U 19 competion for a couple of years.
That will automatically attract new juniors to the club and the original group of players will remain and progress through to reserves and senior level , if they are looked after. It will also ensure that the future of the club will be bright. You will also find that the majority of the Premier League reserve sides are in fact youth sides with the majority of players around 17, 18 and 19 .Restricting this side to under 21 with 3 over age players has been done in the past and failed. This will just encourage clubs who are struggling with numbers, to take the easy option and retain older players who will never make senior level, and prevent another 3 young players with potential from developing.
make clubs have an u/16 team compulsory instead of 19's
19's is useless as if they are not playing seniors at that stage to late........
16's would be better as then you would have 13,14,15 and 16 yr olds coming through the club!
Anon 11.22.
Most U 19 teams consist of 15 and 16 year olds already. It is not useless as you put it.A line must be drawn in the sand at some point and U 19 is perfect.
The U 19 team should be regarded as part of the senior group at the club ,train more frequently, have involvement with reserves and seniors etc , and therefore standard increases, in theory.
knights in strife for rd. 1, holmes knee no good, smith fractured shin and may be out for over 2 months, white out for 3 weeks with gash to his ear and stitches, tatnell shoulder dislocation.
indeed knights in strife for round one and beyond possibly. as stated earlier taroona ran south close in a 90 minute semi final and olympia have improved slowly under chris hey.
I think a few more surprises and the comp will be a bit more even than at first suspected. but south will be the yardstick clearly.
taroona ran south close? are you for real? they played the night before, and 4-0 is hardly an indication of where knights are at? it was a final, when they went down 2-0 fielding then went to 3 men up front (as he said at half time "we may aswell lose 10-0 trying to win than lose 1 or 2 nil sitting back) and it backfired and the flood gates opened.
i am sure knights could have played out a dull 0-0 draw or 1-0 loss like many other will, but they chose to give it a crack and come up short!
South very much ahead of most at present due to pre-season work. A few other teams will improve as the year progresses and as match fitness improves , the gap between them and South will close very quickly.South's problem will still be in the goal scoring dept when playing against a team with a strong backline ,such as the Zebras(on their day)for example.
reading something into competition pre season or not.
taroona better than people gave them credit for and knights not as good as they obviously thought and some neutrals.
hard work and fitness can only take you so far.
observer you are quite right souths big issue will be scoring goals against the better defences but I would suggest that will be an easier issue for them than the other teams trying to stop them.
fitness as one of my coaches pointed out is only a good thing if players have the ability and intelligence to use it. otherwise you become a nuisance and not a player.
get fitter by all accounts but football is played between the ears.
and as a previous post has asked why does a top flight team have an issue with fitness at this time of the season.
oh and if you think the south team that played on saturday was the same as played on sunday you are wrong they have rotated a squad throughout both competitions.
they would have been fresh and ready to play against taroona on sunday as well.
South have had far more fitness and match fitness than everyone so good on them for having an excellent pre season plan but lets all get serious we aren't a professional league and lots of players would have missed alot of trainings and will only be getting fit in the next few weeks. Thats just facts everyone.
South the team to beat but I wouldn't read into the pre season results too much.
anon 4:27 , If you are not up to some kind of fitness standards you will struggle to have much of an impact against better teams unless you are an exceptional player.
Anon 4.27 pm.You are 100% correct. The game is played between the ears ,however if you have it between the ears and yet cannot run ,then you are also a nuisance.
They go hand in hand.
I take it that knights had zimmer frames on saturday night.
if you are so unfit you cannot play at 75-80% capacity you don't play and decent players do that all the time when carrying a niggling injury for example. you don't have to be an exceptional player. why could a player not run in a final?
play if you are not fully fit and can play near your capacity or don't if you can't. mind you you look unfit and slow if your chasing the ball and or opponent. success is about controlling the game and knowing where to be in support of the team not running around unnecessarily.
sounds like not having an impact was either poor selection decisions or players not up to it. how much can a team improve with fitness alone? minimal?
sounds like eammon will need to address that question.
WOW u muppets are a joke tatnell has 1 bad game and use think he should b dropped wat a joke i belive he made a cracking save in the 1st half and he didnt concedd a goal until saturday night giv the kid a brek i didnt c any of u so called anonymous bloggers playing in the summer cup final

not to detract from souths good win but knights get all the cards ... mm refs must have been doing a great job to miss some of those tackles ehhhh looked awful crap reffing from the video but only one angle and editing make it hard to ascertain.
lets hope for improvememnt or at least some consistency
how is A.Robb and B. Garth playing senior football
Squad size important it is. Starting 11 all players cannot be. Handy additions to a squad they are. Why not?
Just got a chance to watch the Summer Cup final highlights on the SH website. Anyone else notice that when Grundy got his yellow card he slid in and hit Scott in his left ankle but when Scott goes down he holds his right shin. I was at the game and saw the tackle and at the time Grundy did protest that Scott had dived. Looks like he definately had a case as Scott has succked the ref in big time with that one.
I haven't seen any stats but I think that the yellow card count was about 5 or 6 to the Knights and 0 to South. Not saying that some of the cards weren't warranted but there certainly appeared to be 2 sets of standards applied in the game with some players particularly hard done by (while others could do no wrong).
who are you the boss ,someone who underachieved as a junior ,never rose to any heights as a player now you are critical of 2 young lads in robb and garth .maybe if you had been committed at some time you would have reaped the rewards of hard work ,but i dont know you ,do you know these boys little man.
robb and garth have been at every training, helped with juniors and been an absolute pleasure to be around on the training track, they have worked their socks off and were given a chhance in the suummer cup, as mentioned on here it is ONLY THE SUMMER CUP, although some of you talk of it like it is the champions league, i think both will feature in under 19's and/or reserves this week, but i will put big money on them reclaiming senior berths in the near future.
how was the tackle near the end on the far side of the pitch not a card?
Anon 10.02
stop being an idiot, you obviously have serious mental problems, which you should keep to yourself, if you thought Scott had dived. Grundy lined him up. Yes it was a hard challenge one you expect from Grundy, but I think you should get out of ur small man syndrome and look at facts, fact is grundy got him.
obviously anon 9.06 you are scotts father of affiliated with im. if grundy got him he would have not got back up. scott jumped 5 metres in the air and sold sean big time. scott is soft and scared and why teams don't attack him more is beyond me. let him go to the mainland, because he would come back in a cast
You would expect nothing less from South, The only honest player in there team would be Upton.
look mate. i don't care if they work hard or turn up to every training. they are not senior material.
least he could make it on the mainland unlike some... yourself comes to mind..
Garth and robb played well when they came on, they have both been through state systems, and desevre their spot more than some in that team.
that is no great claim to fame though. unfortunately the 'state systems' have been a joke for a long time. selections have been questionable and based not on ability but other means. there are many players that have always been better players than those selected miss out, usually it has been those with a bit of flair or creativity cut from squads beacuse the coaches dont know how to handle them.
if we got 2 bucks for every sour grape on this blog we could finance an a leagueside and fit south hobart with an allweather surface
the boss .twanger or whatever obiously you have some kind of grudge against these two boys .are you blind or dont you think that these boys have in my opinion probably exeeded eks expectations one boy is sixteen and one seventeen ,good to see them get a go at a strong club with some brains to match .go away boss idiot
Cracking save or diving for a ball that was hit from 35yds and strait at him from were i was standing behing the goal... lol Yeah bloody joke alright. Pressure got to the young lad. Had poor form end of last season if i remember cost knights a few games. He'll come come once his heads right.
garth has been in a state team. but not robb. They are both decent reserve players but not MAINLAND quality.
Both Garth and Robb will work their heart out, but are not senior material, i agree with boss.

Well said in my opinion. However, i dont think confidence is Koromas problem, he needs to be dropped for a few weeks. Bart best on for South Kosta dominated, Tatnell disgusting, Huigsloot solid for Knights.
