Did any one notice the article in the weekend age where Mark Viduka and J Culina suggested and Australian version of the F A Cup.

Interesting note about the lack of any officials for the Under 19 match.

Personally, I think the allocation structure of referees needs to be looked at in light of the lack of referees they are able to attract/keep due to a number of reasons that have been mentioned before and apparently they will never resolve...

There shouldn't be assistants apointed to Under 19's, Div 1 Res, Women's Div 1, Under 18 etc. when according to FFT website they prioritise those leagues to have an assistant before appointing any referee for Div 2/Div 3 which are arguably of a higher standard than all those leagues. Apart from that, the players involved require a neutral/official ref more to control the game than a club person with limited knowledge causing issues. They also pay more subs than most of those other leagues yet get no FFT support in return!

I wonder why there are no officials, after attending the game today at KGV.

If you were there, you'd know what I was talking about...

One club in particular.

refs at showgrounds yesterday...3 for a div 1 res game & ground next door had a div 3 game with no official at all. Why could't one asst. do the middle? all players pay rego money to cover refs & this sort of thing happens. Not much foresight used in appointments. The "oh it's only div 3" is BS. all leagues need to be looked after where possible if we want our game to prosper.

Brian, read with considerable interest for the state. Imagine our cup winner being involved with 16 or 32 of the best clubs in Australia.
We may not be too successful but winning a round would be massive.
Agree with the article that it would welcome back the old school Austalian clubs and also that it would not be a high priority at the moment.
One day............

A funny thought would be a full strength Melbourne Victory turning up at Taroona, they would have to hire tents to accomodate them!

did you happen to notice that both teams were laughing amongst each other at kgv today?
it was a disgrace

At KGV today, there were no officials at all for the Under 19s and then the reserves match was one assistant short at the outset, until the referee for the Senior game turned up early, and then replaced the Zebras player who had to run the line until this point. What an absolute disgrace.FFT you should be embarrassed.
This senior referee would personally receive payment not only for the senior game he was rostered to do , but also the line in the reserves , no doubt. This person is the one who could not appoint any officials at all for the under 19s.
Maybe he should forfeit his pay for the day and offer it to those volunteers who had to step up yet again and referee and run the line. I doubt that will ever happen though.

After the officials I saw at Prince of Wales Bay on Saturday at the Knights V. South game I honestly believe that Zebras and Kingbrough were lucky not to get officials as one assistant struggled to keep up with play.

As for the actual match the calls made my the referee left for something to be desired. How the last defender can tackle an opposition player from behind and not only not get carded but also not give away a free kick what so ever is a complete joke! It should have been a RED CARD no questions asked! What sort of message does it send to players?

Refereeing was disgraceful today. I don't enjoy seeing players get sent off but the ref must have forgot his red card or his eyes or his whistle. OR all of the above!!

For the record anon Div 3, rego is not not used for ref fee,s, but to cover FFT & FFA costs. What ever fee your club puts on the FFT rego cost is used to cover things such as ground hire, entry fee's etc and ref's if and when you get them. Suggest you take it up with your club to try and get FFT to appoint a ref where possible.

Kaden needs to have more confidence in himself or get out of goals! He was punching the ball straight back to the opposition. School boy error. All any team coming up against Zebras needs to do is make sure they have a seconded player running in for the follow up and put him under as he was clearly struggling at times today. Thats not to say he isnt a decent keeper as he did manage a few good saves.

Anon @7.40pm, that is exactly the problem. It's stupidity to have 3 refs for a Div 1 Reserves game, of which is the quality of the lower Div 3/Div 4 league at best, whilst having no refs at all for Div 2-3. They also do not need assistants, but a neutral main ref is needed more than many other leagues.

Not that you could expect any common sense from such an incompetent mob like FFT!

Walter, I'd be curious for an article/interview with Robert Freke explaining what difference has been made in referee recruiting/retention in the past 4 years he has been involved specifically for that, as I can't see any!

According to what I have been told, I personally know of 2 qualified referees that were not even contacted to see if they were able to officiate the Under 19 Zebras/Kingborough game.
It is obvious then that the people responsible for appointments are incapable ( or unwilling) to offer games to certain individuals.
This is a pathetic situation .I have not agreed with comments made by some on this blog that FFA should step in.After the debacle on the weekend I certainly think it is about time that they did and cleaned out FFT from the cleaners up .And one other thing too. To schedule games for Good Friday is an insult to all concerned. Dont offer the argument that the AFL play on this day as a reason to justify it. AFL is all about television and making money. FFT is not ,so please do not even go there.

I watched a div 4 match on sunday with 2 officials. last season out of 20 odd matches only about 2 had official referees.

while it is nice I am unsure if they were sent or just turned up it's really unclear how appointments are justified reading other comments on here.

p.s the official did do a good job as well.

A good point Observer. Although AFL don't play on Good Fridays (NRL do).

Scheduling games on Easter Sunday is just as bad. They should schedule the games on the Saturday & Monday.

I'm curious why they scheduled no Div 4 games this weekend (they usually play Sunday), yet scheduled other leagues that play Saturdays mainly on a Sunday still, when they have kept the Monday free.

I seriously question the IQ of some...all people involved with FFT!

Observer said...

Apologies , it is NRL I was referring to.

I dont find a problem with having games on Good Friday, its the highest level in this state and it Good Friday shouldn't stop games from going ahead. However Easter Sunday is a different issue.

ginger said...

my understanding is FFT were completely unaware that it was easter this week when the rosters were done. when the issue was clarified with FFT re games on good friday/easter sunday the response was the usual...

oh crap, oops. well too bad, we cant change it now!

Observer said...

Anon 5.18 pm.
Mate there has never been games scheduled on Good Friday for as long as I can remember. Why are all shops , cafes ,pubs all shut ???
Think about it. It is due to the incompetence of staff at FFT that these games have been scheduled. People just dont think.

Tommy said...

My understanding is the games were scheduled over Easter by mistake, that is, they who drew the roster didn't realise this weekend was Easter and that they had scheduled games on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Dalles Hayes said...

If that was the case Tommy then why no Div 4 games? They just decided we would need a break after the first round of games?

Tommy said...

That Dalles I can't answer sorry.

Dalles Hayes said...

I may have an answer Tommy, the social rosters were done at a much later date, mmm..., last week I believe. By that stage they knew what dates Easter would fall on and rostered accordingly.

Anonymous said...

Anyone would think that Easter was a spur-of-the-moment occasion, rather than something that has been around for hundreds of years, and the public holiday dates are known well in-advance each year!

I suppose the ability to know how to use a calendar might be asking a bit too much of such an incompetent mob though!

Even now it would cause no harm in having scheduled Friday matches on Saturday, and the Sunday games moved to Monday.... but we can't have common sense now can we?!

Brian Roberts said...

what matches are scheduled for Friday and / or Sunday .

Anonymous said...

Also Dalles, the Div 3 rosters were only done in the past fortnight (same as Div 4), but they still scheduled a game on Easter Sunday in their wisdom!

I suppose they wouldn't know what day it was today, nevermind 2 weeks ahead!

Anonymous said...

Brian, as far as I can see there is a Prem League & Prem Reserves match on Friday night (Zebras v Clarence). 6x Southern Women's Premier & Reserve League games on the Sunday. 6x Northern Women's Premier on Sunday. Then 1x Men's Div 3 on Sunday as well.

Only 8 Cup games scehduled on the Monday (not involving teams mentioned above). You could even schedule most of the games at one of these venues prior to the 2.30 cup games so the refs can do 2 games, and some of the leagues that don't always get a ref would have a chance to.

That sort of thinking is not possible with the incompetent FFT though. High School intelligence is beyond them!

You seem to be under the misapprehension that Sean Collins appoints referees.

All appointments state wide are made by the Referees Development Manager who utilises Panels (Referees grouped according to level of games most suited to their skills and ability) which were arrived at after consultation with the Technical Committee - of which Mr Collins is not a member.
