Taroona won their opening league match at home last weekend against Olympia Warriors and they probably deserved at least a point from this encounter.
But, they went down 3-2 at home at Kelvedon Park to Tilford Zebras in a controversial match.
Zebras were without central defender Ryan Smith and midfielder Ben Crosswell. The latter left for London on Tuesday.
Zebras took the lead through Dwayne Walsh in the 17th minute, although he looked a mile off-side. Referee Ivan Jozeljic consulted his assistant, Adrian Lockley, who had his flag raised, but then allowed the goal to stand.
Toby Dove equalised for the home side in the 21st minute, tapping home the rebound after Zebras keeper Troy Kaden turned Duncan Carey’s shot against the crossbar.
Walsh restored Zebras’ lead in the 25th minute with an excellent header from Adam Young’s cross, while 10 minutes later, Walsh rattled the Taroona crossbar with a pile-driver from the edge of the box.
Garry Hamilton missed a sitter for Taroona, while team-mate Hugo Luttmer was denied a penalty before the break, but Zebras also squandered a couple of good openings in the first half.
Shortly after the resumption, Kaden did well to turn Duncan Carey’s shot over the bar as Taroona went in search of an equaliser.
But, Walsh took advantage of a ball that bounced over the advancing goalkeeper, Richard Nettlefold, to ram home the Zebras’ third goal and complete his hat-trick in the 63rd minute.
Luttmer brought Taroona back into contention in the 70th minute when he collected Duncan Carey’s pass and gently lobbed the ball over Kaden, but the home side were unable to find an equaliser.

“It was a frustrating match and we did enough to get a result.
“I just don’t know what we have to do to get a penalty.
“I guess people will all see it differently and so will the referee, but it’s frustrating.”
· Tilford Zebras coach, Romeo Frediani, said:
“It was a pretty scrappy game.
“We’ve still got a lot to work on, but I was happy with the result.
“It was a good hat-trick by Walsh. Any hat-trick is a good one.”

From the hill the strips clashed badly - zebras grey much too close to the taroona home strip.
There were numerous occasions where it was obvious both sides either passed to the opposition or let an opponent go because they thought he was one of their own.
The shot of Henry Fagg shows this even in a still shot. When the players were moving it was worse.
Very confusing.
Good game though. Taroona definately on a par with the zebras despite the score on the day.
same problem with knights and eagles on friday, it's getting a bit ridiculous. what happened to the concept of an away strip?
Pretty sure zebras have an away strip and they wore it, grey and black is different to white.
Hmm me thinks its hard for a referee to do something about it, what are they meant to do? If they called off the game there would be an uproar.
Its the clubs responsibility and its not good enough.
Its pathetic by Zebras and Newtown Eagles, pathetic. Completely agree Yoda.
Surely if Zebras have two kits both similar to Taroona then Taroona should wear there away shirt, problem solved.
Interesting that the referee is always at fault.
The fact of the matter is Taroona were the home team and it's Zebras responsibility to ensure that there is NO clash of strip.
Ivan couldn't win here, if he abandoned the game he would have been labelled as 'an individual bigger than the game' and now that the game has been played he's been labelled as incompetent and scared to do something about it.
Not much room to move here !!
With that wonderful thing called hindsight .....it's not as if a manager or coach lives a million miles away from Taroona .....I would have asked someone to get the 'other' strip and shortened the game accordingly.
The events would have been noted along with the match report and then its FFT's responsibiity to do something about it !
The Zebras strip does appear very similar in the photos that Walter has posted. However they were fairly easily distinguishable on the day in my opinion. If there was an issue from the referee's perspective , it should have been the shorts. They were the same colour. If it was that big a deal, they could have worn the reserves shorts at least , if it was such a huge issue.Apparently it didn't appear to be from the referee's perspective.
Gee Heres an idea, zebras have 2 strips and they wore there away strip, if there was a clash(which i didnt think there was) maybe another team should try and do something...
pretty sure zebra's reserves wore a blue and yellow strip why could seniors wear the blue and yellow one also?
maybe zebras should have an away strip thats not so similar to their home strip...
They have the same two strips as Juventus, so maybe other teams should have two strips aswell.
