Glenorchy Knights may have won the half-time foot race with Matthew Nowicki outpacing the rest of the field, but South Hobart won the game convincingly.

It was a grand day for the club and they celebrated their centenary in style. The large crowd was testimony to the work put in by the club committee and appropriate for the occasion and, together with the various food and beverage stalls, made for a festival atmosphere. The performance of Miss Rebecca Downes in singing the national anthem, despite a breakdown in the public address system, was a credit to her professionalism and abilities.

It was good to see some stars of yesteryear in attendance, including Australian Olympic football representative Alistair Rattray and former Rapid star Walter Nikolai.

Playing in the unfamiliar 1912 strip, South Hobart led 1-0 at half-time and then piled on six more goals in the second half.

Seventeen-year-old striker Andy Brennan netted five goals, three of them in the space of eight second-half minutes. The Year 11 student at The Friends’ School was in sensational form and has now scored seven goals in his three senior outings. Coach Ken Morton has solved his goalscoring problems in unearthing this gem.

The win set a new club record for South Hobart of 11 wins in a row. This beats the previous record of 10 wins in a row, which dates back to 1920, according to club statistician Keith Roberts.

The first quarter of the match saw both sides probing each other’s defences, but with hardly a shot fired in anger. The closest either side came to scoring came in the 22nd minute when South goalkeeper Sam Kruijver misjudged and mishandled a speculative lob by Jade Clay and just gained control of the ball before it could cross the line.

South gradually got on top, however, and a brilliant piece of skill by Shae Hickey in the 31st minute almost resulted in a goal. Hickey glided between Mynonge Kamba and Jade Clay on the left of the box and accelerated away, leaving both players in his wake. His dangerous cross-cum-shot was palmed wide of the goal by keeper Ben Peter for a corner.

A minute later, and the home side were in front. Tom Roach slipped the ball through for Jonathon Lo to shoot and, when Peter could only parry, Brennan was on hand to tap home.

Hickey almost added a second in the 34th minute when Peter could only punch a Kostas Kanakaris corner clear, but his volley flew narrowly wide.

South’s Daniel Brown had been cautioned in the 26th minute for dissent, but the Knights had Tony Dzelalija and Anthony Grundy booked just before half-time, the latter for blatantly catching the ball in full flight as the home side threatened to break through. Grundy was also fortunate when Mr Phillips and his assistants did not see him kick out at Hickey with his studs after the ball was gone.

A minute before the interval, Liam Scott floated a cross into the box from the left and Brennan’s diving header flashed centimetres wide of Peter’s right-hand post.

South continued where they left off in the second half and Lo failed when presented with a one-on-one with the keeper, while Brennan escaped the attentions of the Knights defence down the right flank but sent his shot across the face of goal.

Kamba volleyed straight at Kruijver following a corner by Clay in the 55th minute, but it was almost a token effort.

Surprisingly, Grundy was replaced by Juma Barabara in the 58th minute and that took the hard centre out of the Knights defence. Grundy was perplexed by the decision and it came back to haunt his side within three minutes.

In the 61st minute, Scott’s pass enabled Brennan to beat the off-side trap and advance through the middle. Dzelalija lacked the pace to keep up with the youngster, who easily beat Peter to make it 2-0.

Three minutes later, Scott again fed Brennan, who out-paced Lindsay Millington and completed his hat-trick.

Knights brought on James Hope in place of Jackson Marsh in the 65th minute, a move that eventually paid dividends later in the match.

In the 67th minute, Amadu Koroma, who had been playing as a lone striker for the Knights, finally shook his marker and even rounded Kruijver on the left, but his shot from an acute angle was headed off the line by Scott.

A minute later, South responded with their fourth goal when Roach slipped the ball through for Brennan to round Peter and slot the ball into an empty net. Peter appealed for off-side and was booked when he kicked the ball away in frustration before the game could be re-started.

Daniel Brown was then fortunate when he halted a Knights attack with a hand-ball just outside the box. Having been booked in the first half, he might well have been shown a second yellow card and then a red, but Mr Phillips merely awarded a free-kick to Knights, which was taken by Josh Fielding but directed straight at Kruijver.

Roach went on a solo run in the 70th minute and, ignoring the passing opportunities, chose to shoot, but his low drive went wide.

In the 73rd minute, Brennan turned provider as he attacked down the left and crossed the ball into the goalmouth. Alex Holmes seemed asleep and did not notice Lo on his blind side and the South Hobart player blasted an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net to make it 5-0.

Hope repaid his coach’s faith in him when he headed home a consolation goal for the Knights in the 80th minute from Barabara’s right-wing cross.

South again responded to the set-back when, three minutes later, Brennan found himself in a one-on-one with Peter and slipped the ball home for his fifth goal and his side’s sixth.

Four minutes from the end, Lo made it 7-1 when he fired against Peter’s let-hand post and then smashed home the rebound.

At the final whistle, South Hobart celebrated, while the Knights trooped off dejectedly.

· South Hobart coach, Ken Morton, said:

“To go out and perform like we did on such an important day was unbelievable.

“The football was quality, the finishing from young Andy [Brennan] was different class, and Johnny Lo’s goals, six and seven, I think, and he put in a great volley as well. It was good football all round.

“Thanks to the Knights as well. They’ve made this a wonderful day. They’ve come out and supported the event and they’ve played for 90 minutes. They fought to the end, but I think we were in good form today and played well.”

· South Hobart striker, Andy Brennan, said:

“It was a good game. I love playing with the seniors and to get service like that makes it easy sometimes when everything comes your way.

“I would have been happy to score one. It was good to score five.

· Glenorchy Knights coach, Nick Harrison, said:

“For half an hour we competed with them. After that, to be honest, it was all South Hobart.

“Congratulations to South Hobart. I think that’s probably the league as well today for them and I’m sure they’ll have a good evening tonight.

“From our point of view, very disappointed. It was pretty close to being embarrassing in the end.

“But, we’ve got to look at ourselves and we’ve got to start again and we’ve got to bounce back for what is a very important game now against Kingborough.

“All congratulations to South Hobart. They were the better side.

“Again, officials we’re talking about, are we or not? I don’t know. I’ll probably get into trouble for saying that. But, again, there’s what, it’ll be interesting to see the game later on [on video], but three off-sides probably? But there you go. When your luck is out, the decisions go against you.

“But, we’ve let ourselves down and we’ll see what we can do.”

Rumour has it that a few of the South boys had to be shown how to tie a bow on their shirts for the game. :-)

great day, great game and great for the game in tassie. a credit to the SHFC committee and volunteers who put on such a great event.

good to catch up with some familiar faces from the past and see people enjoy a good game of open competitive football. some had come from interstate for the game. knights should be praised for their approach which was to play and not close the game up. they certainly contributed to the spectacle despite being obviously dissapointed with the result.

a real positive for tasmanian football.

Shame Nick Harrison had to spoil his mostly gracious post-match comments by (wrongly) inferring the officials failed to give his team offside decisions that lead to goals.

Knights lacked speed at the back big time. Looked bery slow. Where was Huigsloot? He's probably their quickest back there, not having him there hurt Knights.

Brennan was sensational. Such a talented young player. Keep your head up son. Well done South lads

surf's up, he is entitled to his own opinion. others believe a couple of his 5 were dubious. he's allowed to say what he wants. it's no shame.

Dick Bennett having a severe case of surperiority complex me thinks. Seems as though the only teams worth anything these days are the ones who play into South's game plan by not playing defensively.

Having South score a seven goal advantage over the second best team in the league will do very little for the game in Tasmania. In fact I would think it would become so predicatable and boring that people would stay away in droves, despite some self professed entertaining football being played at times. People want to see good CLOSE football, not a cake walk.

You make it sound like the current situation is somehow South's fault! Quite ridiculous.

Yes, a close contest is what we all want but South have now made that more unlikely so it's up to other teams to improve not implode as Knights are now doing.

Yes the game Eagles v Olympia far more entertaining!! Without a doubt.

'surf's up' that sums up how Morton has been in the past also, so he's only following in kind.

Maybe I have more faith in the clubs to react positively to better competition levels and the standard going up not backwards or just stagnating.

I don't see that scoreline as typical maybe the result in the short term only. I am happy for the club and the team that they are successfull, yes because they have worked hard to achieve it. superiority hardly, the comments were a response to a special one off event and a great crowd enjoying local football.

Interestingly I saw John the football historian from Melbourne who was very impressed with the day and the match and commented it was good to see both clubs fielding young squads in seniors and reserves unlike the VSL competition.

I am sure continued higher standards would happen as a matter of course with a state league competition also. that is the next big step. It did previously and would again.

I also don't see big crowds watching any games in our top competition close or otherwise at the moment so why would they come through the gate now to see a close game of average or ordinary standard? I can only assume you were not at the game.

What a wonderful spectical at South Hobart today! Travelling from intersate and was made aware of this blog whilst down, great job mr pless. Congratulations South on the win and 100 yrs! Some youngsters below me in the stand had a ball, and maybe should be lines people when older as they had seen the 2 or maybe 3 offside goals, but who's counting South had the better and would of won, maybe not by as much though. Will check back in to see the aftermath one home.

And why did they take Googsy off ... he may be a bit slower now than what he was, but he sure puts a lot of presure on the attacking forwards.

May I congratulate Corey Smith on the response given at the SHSC Clubrooms during the post post match ceremonies.

I dips me lid to you.

I would like to congratulate president Zac Baltic and all of the Glenorchy Knights for making the day such a wonderful event. It was great to work with your club and on behalf of all of South Hobart a huge thanks to all the players, the coach and the committee members. We wouldn't have had such a great crowd without the Knights support.
Few club supporters match those of the Knights so it guaranteed a great atmosphere for the day!
Cheers to the Knights who came back after the game as well.

No wonder South Hobart are appreciative of the Knights doing their part last Sunday! Bring them every year for a seven goal hiding!

I do believe that Zac Baltic predicted a Knights victory. Perhaps with Kelly in charge but definately not without him. When the heat was applied they came apart. Kelly was respected by the playing group - it looks like a terrible error to let him go.

I felt sorry for Ben Peter - where was the defence? Fitness issues over three of the back four, simply could not match the intensity.

South must of been rubbing their hands together as little Hickey and Matt Brown, two of their former players, ripped them up.

Congratulations to South - head and shoulders above the rest. Dark days for the Knights.

Attention everyone, South are about to come back to the pack very soon when they lose the players going overseas etc. all can laugh but mark my words...they WILL drop points against kingborough, taroona, zebras and clarence before the year is out. PLUS they cant play cup or finals games when the pressure is on so if i were south hobart, i wouldnt be getting the cabinet ready just yet.

which players are leaving south to go overseas ?

Morton is taking over from Sir Alex and taking Brennan with him.

the dark days may come to the knights yet .lets have a look at the state of them ,they have a plethora of young boys champing at the bit to get a chane to play seniors but when selected spend most of the day on the bench due to what?.have been to every game and seen players sit on the bench for 90 mins that has to be great for a young boys confidence when winning .can see a mass exodus of youth soon if the kids are not given a fair go as other clubs are doing ,building for the future hate to see them end up taking the easy option of olympia or lost to eagles.time to wake up knights .

what has happened to andrew robb and co have they gone to other clubs ? dont hear of them anymore.supposed youth policy of knights .blah blah. blah .backline dead.no spark .get a real coach.

South Had chances in first half when knights kept them further from goal and not one on one with keeper! 1st half Peter kept great check out the save on youtube against a brilliant run from Hickey! Footage also shows what Really happened on the day with offsides etc...

Knights are still 2nd on the ladder with a game in hand, how bad must the rest of the comp be?

KEEP IT REAL -
To all of the fools who keep suggesting to refer to the Youtube footage to prove some goals were offside, I suggest you don't know much about camera angles or have ever officiated in sport at any capacity.
Through athletics and numerous sports it is a golden rule that you have to be in a dead straight line with athletes to determine who is front of another.
Thats why you end up with 10 judges crammed together to adjudicate on a close finish in running races etc.

The linesman in correct position, in line with the last defender,or anyone lucky enough to be sitting exactly behind him, are the only people capable of ruling on a close offside.

The Utube camera would have to be positioned exactly in the same line of site to be able to be used with any form of credibilty in determining if an offside was legit or not.
IT WASN'T.

Dr. Buddy Rydell said...

for atheletics they have 8 judges for a race each holding a time piece for each competitor in the race. and they click stop as they cross the line so each competitors times are recorded. That is why they have so many judges. they were that offside u can tell from video footage. seems to me somebody needs to visit some anger management/Therapy, Have a nice day friend :)

knights might even take a tumble down the social league standing with the comps MVP Anton 'adonis bruiser' Baltic struck down with a knee injury and could be missing from hobarts waterfront for the rest of the year!! did he do enough to still win the MVP award at the end of the year or will others catch up and pass him?? only time will tell.

good luck with the recovery Anton hope to c u back in out on the town sooner rather than later!

bring back danny white

Anonymous said...

dont worry about danny white play some kids

Anonymous said...

Iagree anon play some kids most clubs that have had there arse kicked like the knights have lately would think that the problems would be adressed with changes to personell if a player is not playing well give him a week in the twos but no not knights too scared of losing old warhorses instead lose young potential future players because of lack of opportunity which is sad because these kids have to see a club be satisfied with mediocrity without the chance to prove themselves .bring back ek maybe but dont stay on this path.

The debate about offside is irrelevant. It wasn't offside as the flag wasn't raised. End of story.

Seven lashes of the cane for the Knights. Deserved punishment for such defending.

There appeared to be little in the reserves for the Knights to get excited about either.

Bring back Kelly.
