Ten-man Adelaide knocks off leaders Sydney FC

Ten-man Adelaide United beat Sydney FC 2-1 at Hindmarsh Stadium tonight.

Cristiano netted both goals for Adelaide - in the 29th and 54th minutes - and John Aloisi replied for Sydney FC in the 78th minute.

Adelaide played with ten men for 82 minutes after the dismissal of Fabian Barbiero for a professional foul on Mark Bridge.

Cristiano’s first goal came from a header after a corner, while his second was also from a header, which was fumbled over the line by Sydney goalkeeper Clint Bolton.

Adelaide might have had a third in injury time when a wayward back-pass eluded Bolton, but the shot from an impossible angle by an Adelaide attacker hit the post.

“I’m absolutely rapt,” said Adelaide United coach, Aurelio Vidmar. “It was a good game all round.

“It was an important win. We really needed it and it’s put us on 15 points.”

The win puts Adelaide in 5th place, while Sydney stays 2 points clear at the top.
