Metro hot favourite for Division One Summer Cup Final

Metro will be the favourites when they take on New Town Eagles in tonight’s final of the Division One section of the Summer Cup competition at 6pm at KGV Park.

With their three Scottish imports in fine fettle and scoring and making goals, it is difficult to envisage anything but Metro lifting the trophy.

Ricky Orr is proving a clinical finisher in attack, Colin Sweeney is providing the ammunition from midfield, and Grant Malcolm is shoring up the defence.

In addition to the three imports, Metro have the able captain/coach Darrin Chaffey and the experienced Matthew Gasparin at the back, while Nathan Brown has returned to the club and is scoring goals in attack.

Michael McKenna should start in goal and he will be difficult to beat.

Eagles’ Steven Bukowiecki will retain his spot, while under-19s Stefan Sommerville and Adam Colgrave will also be included.

Richard Leszczynski, Adam Jones and Richard Ketchell will be rested in preparation for the beginning of the league season next weekend.

“We had a fantastic win over Taroona last weekend, but it has taken its toll on the boys,” said Eagles coach, Marty Nidorfer.

“I doubt if they will be able to fire on all three cylinders again this Friday night.”

The Women’s Summer Cup final kicks off at 8pm, with the Tasmanian Institute of Sport taking on Hobart Olympic.

TIS have done very well to reach the final and will be slight favourites going into this match.

The squad is going to China next month and every girl will be keen to cement a place in the starting line-ups for the tour matches.

Hobart Olympic’s team comprises most of last year’s Nelson team, nearly all of whom transferred to Olympic.

Their experience will be considerable, but their fitness and speed will be tested by the young guns of the TIS.

"Richard Leszczynski, Adam Jones and Richard Ketchell will be rested in preparation for the beginning of the Division One league..." Does this mean Eagles are being allowed a Div 1 team Walter?

"Into the fray", it was my error and not Marty's. I will change it. He just said 'league' and because I didn't quote him directly. for some reason I said 'Division One'. I should, of course, have said 'Division Two'.

While on the subject, I wouldn't be surprised if Richard Leszczynski plays tonight. I spoke to him at training on Tuesday and he said a 6pm kick-off would make it a little difficult for him to get to the game on time as he doesn't finish work until 5.30pm. That seems to imply he will be playing.

Thanks for clearing that up Walter. Leszczynski is an evergreen...
