Central Coast Mariners and Korean outfit Pohang Steelers drew 0-0 in their Asian Champions League match at Bluetongue Stadium in Gosford tonight.
In a physical but dull match, the Mariners committed 27 fouls and the Steelers 17.
The Koreans, who had the appropriately named Brazilian, Brasilia, partnering the Macedonian Stevica Ristic in attack, had one half-chance in the opening half, while Matt Simon missed two good openings in the first period for the Mariners.
Ristic is the K-League player-of-the-year.
The second half was also lack-lustre, with the best chance coming in injury time when Mariners' keeper Danny Vukovic had to tip a dangerous shot over the bar.
If this is what Australian teams have to offer in Asian competition, the average Joe in the street will not be bothered watching. It was made quite clear yet again that Australian teams - both the national side and club sides - cannot score goals.
Mariners' coach Lawrie McKinna said: "It was solid, but not flash."
That just about sums it up. In restrospect, I wish I hadn't hurried home from an FFT function to watch the game.
