Knights a little too good for Lions

GLENORCHY KNIGHTS 1-0 KINGBOROUGH LIONS UNITED

There was nothing riding on this game and it allowed the sides to express themselves more freely.

There were some delightful passages of play from both teams, characterised by good teamwork and slick one-touch and two touch play.

Some of the build-ups were excellent, but the finishing from both sides was less than clinical.

Jackson Marsh played at left-back for Knights, while Tony Dzelaljia was excellent in a midfield role in the opening half.

It was Marsh who had the first real attempt at goal after just three minutes. His beautifully struck volley was superbly saved by Jason Voss.

The Lions had two quick chances in the 7th minute. Tom McDonald’s shot was not well handled by Ben Peter, who allowed the ball to roll into the path of Marcus Bremner, but the keeper recovered quickly and smothered Bremner’s effort and conceded a corner.

The Knights produced a marvellous build-up on the quarter-hour which ended with Josh Fielding setting up Amadu Koroma, but the young striker was denied by a fine save from Voss.

In the 21st minute, Fielding’s alertness and excellent execution enabled him to lob the ball over Voss and score the only goal of the game.

Midway through the second half, Joel Schuth almost equalised. Jayden Wiggins gave the ball away in midfield and Schuth attacked but shot just wide of the far post.

The Knights hit back and, with 10 minutes remaining, Cosmos Paite’s right-wing cross found Koroma close to goal, but tightly marked by two defenders.

Koroma could not quite get the ball under control and the Lions’ defence cleared.

With three minutes left, a great cross from the left by Clay was met by Mynonge Kamba, who launched himself into the air and scissor-kicked the ball at goal, but it just went wide of the far left-hand post. It would have been one of the goals of the tournament if it had gone in.

A minute into stoppage time, Clay missed an absolute sitter from directly in front when he failed to connect with Fielding’s cross from the right.

  • Glenorchy Knights coach, Eamonn Kelly, said:

“It was just a game of football and nothing flash.

“Again, in patches, we played some good one-touch and two-touch football, but then we let ourselves down with silly give-aways instead of being patient and controlling and working on what we work on at training each day.

“They just seem to lose their marbles. Whether it’s youth, I don’t know, whether it’s because they’re young, I’m not quite sure.

“We’ve still got a fair way to go. It’s not even the start of the season yet, so we’re happy with the status we’re at.

“Fitness is good, but we just need to learn a bit of patience and a bit of quality.”

  • Kingborough Lions United coach, Geoff Freeman, said:

“Not too disappointed, really.

“I think we played much better in the second half.

“We knocked the ball around and we created some opportunities.

“But, we’re just not scoring at the moment.

“But, again, at this time of the season that’s not too much of a concern.

“I was pleased with the way the boys responded after going one down. I think we knocked the ball about nicely in the second half.

“They still created some opportunities, but it’s positive.
