Adelaide United destroyed Brisbane Roar’s final aspirations with a 2-0 home win over the visiting ‘Banana Benders’ at Hindmarsh Stadium on Saturday night before 8,244 fans, Adelaide’s lowest attendance of the season.

Fabian Barbiero gave Adelaide the lead in the 7th minute, rifling home Matthew Leckie’s cut back from the right from 6 metres out.

Lucas Pantelis made it 2-0 in the 51st minute with a right-foot drive from the edge of the box after the ball was deflected to him.

It was Pantelis’s fifth goal of the season.

Brisbane had captain Matt MacKay sent off in the 82nd minute after he fouled Adelaide United’s new Argentinian signing, Marcos Flores, who came on as a substitute after an hour.

Adelaide, who are still in last place on the A-League ladder, play their first Asian Champions League match of the year on 24th February against Pohang Steelers.

Adelaide, who have one A-League match remaining, are a point behind second-last Central Coast Mariners, whose game against Newcastle United at Gosford was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

In the youth league curtain-raiser, Brisbane trailed Adelaide 4-1 before three late goals gave the visitors a 4-4 draw.
