Newcastle Jets 0-2 Central Coast Mariners

Central Coast Mariners moved into second place on the A-League ladder on goal-difference over third-ranked Adelaide United with this 2-0 win over the Newcastle Jets at EnergyAustralia Stadium on Sunday.

The Jets are in sixth spot, level on 31 points with seventh-placed Melbourne Victory.

The Jets suffered a huge blow with less than 10 minutes gone when Kasey Wehrman damaged an ankle in a tackle and had to be replaced.

In the 14th minute, a high ball from the left played through the middle was missed by Nikolai Topor-Stanley and picked up by Matt Simon, who ran into the box and rounded the goalkeeper before slotting it home into an empty net to give the Mariners the lead.

The Mariners did not make the game safe until 3 minutes from the end when substitute John Hutchinson netted their second goal with a low drive from the right after Michael McGlinchey squared the ball into his path.

The Mariners have now lost just once in their past nine outings.

It all makes Tasmania's performance against the Mariners at KGV Park last season look even better, despite the 3-0 loss.
