University eased their relegation fears with this 2-0 win over second-last Clarence United at home at Olinda Grove.

They are now just three points behind Clarence and New Town Eagles and have seven games remaining.

University have shown definite improvement and even without Alexis Bull and Julian Proud were well worth their win.

Clarence were without Sam Cannamela, who has an infected foot. He is heading overseas anyway and will not play again this season.

Clarence had the better of the opening half, but failed to find a way past University goalkeeper Hamish Peacock, who produced a couple fo acrobatic saves.

University launched only sporadic attacks and they came to nought.

In the 37th minute, however, Clarence defender Sam McIntyre brought down Nigel Blundell in full flight and Andrew King stroked home the penalty to give University a 1-0 lead at the interval.

University grew in confidence in the second half and had the better of possession and the chances.

Blundell almost scored in the 64th minute when presented with a chance at the far post, but Clarence blocked the effort and conceded a corner.

A minute later, Blundell had better luck and made it 2-0 for the home side, who never looked back after that.

  • University coach, Scott Gallacher, said:

“I think it was a great team effort from us today.

“The coaching staff - Hume Moase, Kevan Wright, myself - came up with a game plan today and it worked for us.

“They changes theirs and put three strikers up. We never panicked.

“I’d like to think we’re worrying the teams above us now, but we’ll just keep trying to win games and see how we go.

“We’re not giving up, put it that way.”

  • Clarence United coach, Andrew Brown, said:

“First and foremost, congratulations to University.

“They worked incredibly hard today. They were incredibly desperate and, in the end, it was a bit like a cup game in that the team that is desperate enough to win the game wins it.

“It was almost like a reversal of our State-wide Cup game.

“We had enough chances in the first half to finish the game off and didn’t convert.

“In the second half, I think they put up a brick wall and we just couldn’t penetrate and didn’t even look like scoring in the end.”
