Tilford Zebras hit Clarence United with a goal after just 50 seconds. A high ball forward was held up by the wind and confused goalkeeper Sam Sweetten, enabling Kurt Engels to gain possession and lift the ball over the keeper and into the net.

Sweetten was in goal in place of Michael Moschogianis, who suffered a finger injury during the week.

Zebras were missing injured striker, Ben Crosswell.

Clarence created more than enough chances to get back into the game and Andy Barron and Ben Hamlett both went close, while Zebras keeper Troy Kaden was also called upon to make a fine save.

The final ignominy came in the last minute of the opening half when Ricky Self fouled Barron and Mr Phillips awarded a penalty. Luke Cripps fired wide with his spot-kick.

Three minutes into the second half, Matt Hall made it 2-0 for the visitors after good play by Engels and Dwayne Walsh had carved open the home side’s defence.

Kaden then did well to keep out a header from Cripps, but Clarence finally found a goal when Hamlett crossed from the right and Ryan Smith slipped inside the box. Cripps gained possession and advanced on goal before slipping the ball past Kaden to make it 2-1.

Hall restored the Zebras’ two-goal advantage in the 64th minute, while a fine individual effort by Walsh in the 75th minute made the game safe.

The win keeps Zebras three points ahead of second-placed and reigning champions South Hobart, who have two games in hand.

  • Clarence United acting coach, Franco Previdi, said:

“It could have gone the other way a round in the first half.

“We just didn’t put the goals away and that cost us.

“I mean, we did everything we could to win it, but, obviously, we felt the effects of Thursday night’s game.

“I don’t think it’s good enough to play Thursday and Saturday.

“They put the goals away.

“But, we could have won it easily as well.

“It was the same on Thursday against Eagles. If you don’t put the goals away, you don’t win the game. Eagles didn’t put them away and we won.

“At half-time I told the boys to keep working hard, but again, a goal early on cost us.”

  • Tilford Zebras coach, Nick Lapolla, said:

“It was a win we needed in the end, and now we’re not mourning Michael Jackson any more.

“The boys were mourning Michael Jackson.”
