Dour draw ends a torrid week for Newcastle Jets

Newcastle Jets 0-0 Brisbane Roar

Brisbane Roar are third on the A-League ladder and problem-plagued Newcastle Jets ninth after the sides drew 0-0 at EnergyAustralia Stadium in Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

Newcastle were unable to pay their players last week and there was also an alleged heated argument between a couple of players and almost a fight on the training pitch between two others during the week.

The game only sparked into life in the last half-hour.

Newcastle finished the match with 10 players after Ruben Zatkovich was sent off 8 minutes from the end when he was shown a second yellow card.

There were some close calls for both sides, but the match rarely rose to great heights in the strong winds that were lashing the New South Wales coast.

In the 62nd minute, Brisbane’s Reinaldo crashed a header off the underside of the crossbar from Matt McKay’s corner from the right.

In the 79th minute, Brisbane keeper Michael Theoklitos made a brilliant save from a low shot aimed at the near right-hand post by Ali-Abbas Al-Hilfi.

Four minutes from the end, Mitch Nichols’s shot was well saved by Newcastle keeper Ben Kennedy.
