Wellington Phoenix beat the Newcastle Jets 4-0 at home at Westpac Stadium in Wellington this afternoon to draw level with their opponents on 25 points.

The Jets stayed in 5th spot on goal-difference, with the Phoenix in 6th place.

The Phoenix suffered an early blow when top scorer Paul Ifill fell awkwardly and damaged his left knee. He was stretchered off in only the 12th minute and replaced by Chris Greenacre. It looked like a serious injury and if the striker requires surgery, he may be out for the season.

Tim Brown put the Phoenix in front in the 18th minute. Marco Rojas played the ball through for Greenacre on the right and his cross was headed home by Tim Brown, who outjumped Taylor Regan at the far post.

It was 2-0 in the 31st minute when Manny Muscat’s deep cross from the left was headed down for Rojas to net from close range.

Greenacre made it 3-0 in the 42nd minute after a corner. Elrich hooked the ball out, but it was adjudged to have crossed the line.

Newcastle missed some good chances in a better second-half performance, including two sitters by substitute Labinot Haliti.

Two minutes from the end, Dylan Macallister added the Phoenix’s fourth after Daniel had played Brown through on the right and he squared the ball for Macallister to slot home.

The loss ended the Jets’ unbeaten run of seven matches.
