Perth Glory 0-1 Wellington Phoenix: First win in 5 games for Phoenix

Perth Glory 0-1 Wellington Phoenix

A goal after just 41 seconds by Tim Brown was enough for visitors Wellington Phoenix to sink Perth Glory at NIB Stadium on Sunday evening.

A wayward clearance inside the box by Andy Todd flew to Chris Greenacre, who nodded the ball back and down for Brown to smash home with his left foot from the edge of the box.

Michael Baird should have equalised for Perth in the 4th minute when he was put through for a one-on-one with keeper Mark Paston, but his tame attempted chip from the edge of the box was blocked by Paston with his left arm.

Referee Kris Griffiths-Jones had his hands full in this match, issuing 9 yellow cards and one red, the latter to Perth captain Jacob Burns for a second yellow card.

Perth defender Scott Neville was the first one to see yellow after a far from yellow tackle on a Phoenix opponent. Neville was injured in the incident and paid a double price as he had to be substituted after just half an hour.

Two minutes after the break, a poor header by Jamie Coyne enabled Paul Ifill to race into the box and past a hesitant Andy Todd before shooting at goal, but Tando Velaphi produced a fine save.

Mark Paston, in goal for Phoenix, was man-of-the-match. He was reliable on the ground and unbeatable in the air.

Typical of his performance was his early save against Baird, and his 69th minute denial of Coyne.

Perth brought on Robbie Fowler on the hour in place of Baird, but ‘god’ was unable to bring about salvation and Glory slumped to 8th place on the A-League ladder, 3 points adrift of their 7th-ranked conquerors, who recorded their first win in five matches.
